1. History
Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture is only one university in Beijing with architecture studies at high level. Civil Engineering Division began in the early 1936 from Industrial Vocational High School for Beijing Architectural College and approved by the State Council in 1977 as a university and renamed Beijing construction Engineering College. In 1982 was qualified as the first university of that kind to offer bachelor’s degree, few years later 1986 the university started to offers courses for master's degree. Recently, in 2011 was identified by the Ministry of Education as the university with “Excellent Engineers Training Education Program". April 2013, the name Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture was approved by Ministry of Education.
2. Discipline and programs
Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture (BUCEA) now has 3 basic teaching units, namely, School of Architecture and Urban Planning, School of Civil and Transportation Engineering, School of Environment and Energy Engineering, School of Electrical Engineering and Information Technique, School of Economics and Management Engineering, School of Geometrics and Urban Information, School of Mechanical-electronics and Automobile Engineering, School of Humanity and Law, School of Sciences, School of Continuing Education, School of International Education. BUCEA has 34 undergraduate programs, including key national programs of Ministry of Education and key programs of Beijing municipal government. The university has also 55 master's programs and several doctoral programs as well as post-doctoral research stations. All these programs students can major in architecture, civil engineering, building environment, equipment engineering, water supply and drainage engineering, project management, surveying engineering and automation, mapping science and technology, management science and engineering, and urban planning study. At the present the university has 8218 full-time internal students, 7283 of whom are undergraduates, 1212 postgraduate students, and 67 international students.
3. Academic facilities and Scientific research
Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture is composed of two campuses, West Campus and Daxing Campus. West Campus area of 123,000 square meters, the building area of 202,000 square meters; Daxing campus covers 501,000 square meters, the building area of 265,000 square meters. At present, there are 1020 staff members in BUCEA, and 710 of them are full-time teachers. 588 teachers, or 83% of the total, have got master’s degree, and 281, or 40% have got doctor’s degree. Of the 410 teachers with senior professional technical titles, 108 are full professors. The university library has a collection of 1,348,000 printed books, 1,210,000 electronic books, 40 large electronic literature database. With China Architectural Library which is co-built with MOHURD, BUCEA boasts its architectural books that are the most complete in China. In the past five years, BUCEA has been in charge of over 1700 scientific research projects, of which 354 were at or above provincial and ministerial levels such as the State 863 and the State Scientific and Technological Support Projects.
4. Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture Achievement
Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture has won 56 scientific and technological achievements prizes at or above provincial-ministerial levels, 8 of which were State Technological Invention Award and National Award for Technological Invention. It is one of the two universities identified as the first equity incentive pilot reform units of Zhongguancun National Innovation Demonstration Zone. In 2013, the university was hired by the Ministry of Education to be a national virtual simulation teaching center and National Experimental Teaching Center
5. Communication and international cooperation
Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture (BUCEA), takes active approaches in conducting substantive cooperation in high-level talents training, scientific research and other aspects. It has established long-term cooperation relationship with 35 universities and colleges in America and Europe. Particularly, BUCEA build an exchange program with civil engineering undergraduates from US University of Colorado Boulder, Exchange Program with students from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, and exchange Program with architectonics undergraduates and postgraduates from Italian Polytechnic University of Marche.
