Brief Introduction 

Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) is a comprehensive university with information technology as its main feature, engineering and science as its main focus and a combination of engineering, management, humanities and sciences as its main pursuit, which becomes an important base for fostering high-tech talents.  BUPT founded in 1955, is a university directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education (MoE) and co-built by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). BUPT is one of the first “Project 211” universities. The university has 22,000 full-time students and about 30,000 part-time students. It offers 36 undergraduate programs, 17 PhD programs, 56 master programs and 5 post-doctoral programs.

1. History 

Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications was founded in 1955, originally named as Beijing Institute of Posts and Telecommunications (BIPT). Based on the Telecommunication Department, Telephone and Telegraph Communication major and Wireless Communication major from Tianjin University, as well as the Telephone and Telegraph Communication major from Chongqing University, BIPT finally came into being. BIPT, under the administration of former Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, is the first higher institute featuring posts and telecommunications. In 1959 and 1960, Beijing Telecommunications Institute, its affiliated Vocational School, and the Science and Technology University of Posts and Telecommunications were successively merged into Beijing Institute of Posts and Telecommunications. In1993, approved by the former State Education Commission, BIPT was renamed as Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, which was autographed by Jiang Zemin, the former President and General-Secretary of CPC Central Committee. BUPT is one of the 73 Key National Universities under the administration of the Chinese Ministry of Education, the university offers a wide range of subjects including engineering, management, humanities and sciences, and most of its subjects and disciplines are related to applied science and engineering. It serves as one of the most important teaching and research bases for information technology and telecommunication industry in China.

2. Discipline and programs

Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) is one of the 56 universities in China that are authorized to formally form a Graduate school by the General Office of the Academic Degree of the State Council after a long time of painstaking experiment. It is also one of the earliest universities in China that has officially been authorized to offer doctoral and master programs. BUPT has fourteen schools, namely the School of Telecommunication Engineering, School of Computer Science and Technology, School of Information Engineering, School of Automation, School of Economics and Management, School of Humanities, Law and Economics, School of Electronic Engineering, School of Languages, School of Sciences, School of Continuing Education, School of Network Education, School of Software Engineering, International School and School of Ethnic Minority Education. BUPT offers 36 undergraduate programs, 56 postgraduate programs, two professional degrees -MBA and Master of Engineering and 17 doctoral programs to the domestic and overseas students. 

3. Academic facilities and Scientific research 

Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT), has two stake Key Laboratories: Stake Key Laboratory of Networking and Switching Technology and State Key Laboratory of Information Photonics and optical communications.  There also 6 Provincial Key Laboratory: Key Laboratory of Universal Wireless Communications of Ministry of Education, Key Laboratory of Trustworthy Distributed Computing and Service of Ministry of Education, Beijing Key Laboratory of Intelligent Telecommunication Software and Multimedia, Beijing Key Laboratory of Network System and Network Culture, Beijing Key Laboratory of Work Safety Intelligent Monitoring, and Beijing Key Laboratory of Network System Architecture and Convergence. Apart from Key Laboratories the university has research centers for engineering: National Engineering Laboratory for Disaster Backup and Recovery, State Engineering Laboratory for Information Security. The library has distinct characteristics of posts, telecommunications and electronics with many prestigious professional books on telecommunications throughout the world. It is no doubt number one in that respect in quantity or quality in China. Now there are 1,100,000 books in the library, including 3,000 periodicals. 

4. Great Achievement

In the 2001 national assessment, the following four second-grade subjects of BUPT: "Communication and Information System", "Electromagnetic Field and Microwave Technology", "Signal and Information Processing" and "Circuit and System" were accredited as national-level key subjects. Among them, "Communication and Information System" ranked No.1. Again, in the 2002 national assessment, two BUPT first-grade subjects-"Electronic Science and Technology" and "Information and Communication Engineering" ranked second and third.

Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications has one ministry-level Engineering Center under the leadership of Ministry of Education-"Research Center of Information Network Engineering", and one National University Science Park-"Information Valley". BUPT is one of the first “Project 211” universities.  BUPT was listed in the “Project 985 Innovation Platform for Outstanding Discipline”. In 2012, the discipline of Information and Communication Engineering of BUPT ranked NO.1 in the assessment of the National Key Discipline.

5. Communication and international cooperation

Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications attaches great importance to the exchanges and cooperation with other higher education institutions both at home and abroad and has established inter-university academic exchange programs with over 70 universities form 40 countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, France, Japan, Korea and those from the regions of Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. BUPT has also cooperated successfully with many world-renowned enterprises in telecommunications to create a better environment for students to develop their modern and international consciousness. Currently, the figure of international students studying in BUPT reaches 410 and they are coming from more than 70 countries. In 2004, BUPT initiated the International School (approved by the Ministry of Education) to implement the International Joint Degree Programs with Queen Mary, University of London.
