Brief Introduction

Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine was founded in 1956. It is one of the four oldest Traditional Chinese Medicine higher education institutions in mainland China. 

(1). History

Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine was established in 1956 on the base of Guangdong Chinese Medicine special school which was founded in 1924. It changed its name into Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine in 1995.

The Foreign Affairs Department was formed in March 1980, from the merger of Overseas Students Affairs Office and Foreign Affairs Office. On June 1991, China Guangzhou International Training Center of Traditional Chinese Medicine was established in our university. It was affiliated to Foreign Affairs Department and changed its name to International College in 1997. Now, International College has six section offices including Foreign Affairs Office, Foreign Student Affairs Office, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Student Affairs Office, International College Office, Teaching and Research Office and Life Management Office.

(2). Discipline Construction

For studies in Bachelor degree, we have 20 programs on offer, featuring Medicine, Engineering, Administration, Economics, Arts and Education, etc. For post graduate study, we provide 46 master degree and 19 doctor degree programs in Chinese Medicine, Chinese Herbal Medicine and Integration of Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine, and we also own three centers for post-doctoral studies and practicums. 

(3). Campus Overview

Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine has two campuses (overall 920,000 square meters), namely the San Yuan Li Campus and the Higher Education Mega Center Campus. Our academic departments are organized into 15 schools, as well as 10 research institutions. And we have the only Museum of Chinese Medicine, which is also the biggest one in South China. The GZUCM has one of the most professional academic supports in Chinese Medicine fields. Currently has 1 National TCM Master, 2 chief scientists of Plan 973 (Core National Basic Research Plan) and 1 Chung Kong Professor and 4 Pearl River Scholars. At present, we have more than 20,000 students enrolled, including 14,692 undergraduates; 3,485 postgraduates and 2,382 Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and overseas students. 

(4). Affiliated Hospitals

Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine has 26 affiliated hospitals and 35 teaching hospitals. The first, second and third affiliated hospital form 43 national key featured clinical care department, which can provide more than 5,000 beds. The hospital’s amount of outpatient users has reach 15 millions annually which has been the first place in China for 20 years.

(5). Significant Achievements

Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine won two national technology second prizes in 2000. It is the only Chinese medicine college that wins two national technology second prizes in one year. 

From 2006 to 2010, the university has undertook 1600 research projects, among which 30 was nominated by Ministry of education for National Science and Technology Award and the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, 4 for Guangzhou Science and Technology Progress Award, 17 for Science and Technology Award of the Chinese Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The university applied 46 patents, 13 have been patented, and 7 are patents of invention. in 2004, the university got the National Social Science Fund for the first time. In 2005, the achievement of “Development and application of artemisinin compound for the prevention and treatment of Plasmodium falciparum malaria” won the Second Award of the Scientific and Technological Progress of the State. 

Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine has formed unique advantages in the research of the spleen and stomach, malaria research, treatment of femoral head necrosis, tumor, diabetes, AIDS, skin disease, infertility, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease, myasthenia gravis, mentally retarded children and difficult disease clinical and experimental study of TCM, medical herbs cultivation and development.

(6). Communication and Cooperation

In the past 40 years, we have trained more than 60,000 outstanding overseas talents in Chinese Medicine from 113 countries and regions. With the expanding impact of China’s Opening to the Outside World and the growing influence of Chinese Medicine in foreign countries and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, friendly exchanges between our university and CM organizations abroad become frequently. Our university has established cooperative relationship with CM organizations in more than 50 countries and regions including Japan, Australia, U.S.A, U.K., Italy, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, etc. From January 2001 to March 2006, the total number of visitors was 2,970 from 27 countries and regions including Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Australia, U.S.A, Canada, Columbia, France, Italy, South Africa, Liberia, Malta, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, etc. Between 2001 and 2005, our university had sent 645 staff to other countries for visiting, academic exchanging, lecturing, project cooperation and international conference. From July 2001 until now, it has trained 523 qualified CM professionals for 35 countries and regions. By the end of June 2006, our university had hold 378 short-term Chinese Medicine education training and received over 5,000 CM learners from more than 50 countries and regions. In 2009, we have become a base of international exchanges and cooperation of Ministry of Science and Technology and State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and now is one of the foremost Universities of Chinese Medicine in the world.
