Why Study at Ocean University of China
Ocean University of China is a comprehensive university with particular strengths in oceanography and fisheries science. Ocean University of China offers courses in Science, Engineering, Agronomy (Fisheries), Pharmaceutics, Economics, Management, Liberal Arts, Law, Education, History, and Art. Ocean University of China has been approved as one of the national key universities included in the list of “Project 985” (for China’s top 40 universities) and “Project 211” (for China’s top 100 universities). Ocean University of China is one of the first universities approved to confer PhD degrees, Master’s degrees and Bachelor’s degrees by the State Academic Degree Committee. (1). History
First established in 1924, the Private Qingdao University (now known as Ocean University of China) was the first modern institution of higher learning established by Chinese people in Shandong Province. The university adheres to the idea of imparting profound knowledge and cultivating talented professionals to meet the needs of the country. A total number of 40 students of engineering and business majors were enrolled as the first group of students since its establishment.
(2). Discipline and programs
Ocean University of China was one of the first universities authorized by the State Council’s Academic Degree Committee to confer doctoral, master and bachelor degrees. It is also authorized to confer all academic titles including professors and Ph.D. supervisors. Currently, the university offers 69 undergraduate programs administered within 22 colleges and departments. 13 first level and 80 second level doctoral programs as well as 34 first level and 192 second level master programs are offered. In addition, the university provides 13 post-doctoral research stations. Ocean University of China boasts ten national key disciplines (including ten sub-disciplines) and 20 provincial key disciplines.
(3). Academic facilities and Scientific research
Seven key research labs affiliated with the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, nine key research labs affiliated with Shandong Province, and four key research labs affiliated with Qingdao Municipality have been set up in the university. In addition, the university has three engineering research centers affiliated with Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and two engineering research centers affiliated to Shandong Province.
The Qingdao Marine Science and Technology National Laboratory, headed by Ocean University of China, with an estimated total investment of one billion Chinese yuan, is currently under construction. The university has also set up a national base for training talents to be engaged in basic research and teaching in the fields of oceanography and marine chemistry. Under the university's self-understanding, its objectives are to increase reform in education and teaching, continue to focus on its specialties and to meet the need of social and economic development. The school guideline of "Unity, Diligence, Practicality and Creativity" strives to cultivate a unique educational style and school discipline. The university has a 3500-ton marine vessel, the Dongfanghong 2 (Red East,). It is 96 meters long and 15 meters wide and is considered one of the most advanced research vessels in China. The ship is both used in comprehensive and systematic research in multi-disciplines including hydrology, meteorology, physics, chemistry, biology, geology and geophysics as well as for fieldwork done by students at the sea.
(4). Great achievements
Ocean University of China has made great achievements in science technology, and enhanced innovation ability. In 2002, it has achieved first prize of national scientific technology, two items of second prize, and six items of the second prize in national scientific technology progress, 70 items of provincial scientific technology progress, and 1549 items of patents, of which 24 items of international patents. Nine disciplines have ranked 1% in American scientific institution ESI. According to the Comprehensive Research Report on Competition in Marine Technology by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, statistics show that from 2009 to 2013, Ocean University of China ranks No.14 in the world in terms of the amount of academic thesis published and included in the SCI information retrieval systems. Based on the analysis of 29912 theses on all the 50 journals in fishery sciences from 2009-2014 with impact factor, Ocean University of China ranked No.5 in terms of the amount of theses published by corresponding authors.
(5). Communication and international cooperation
Ocean University of China adheres to the open education, and is implementing international strategy. So far, the university has established cooperative relations with over 180 institutions of higher learning and research institutes in more than 30 countries and regions. In 2005, the International Association of Marine-related Institutions (IAMRI) was proposed and founded at Ocean University of China. New members and expanded cooperation programs are continuously added to the list. In 2005, Ocean University of China joined in “Sino-US 10+10”, a joint program between 10 excellent universities in China and 10 prestigious universities in the UC system (University of California in the U.S.) In 2008, the Confucius Institute in Texas was jointly established by OUC and Texas A&M University. In addition, Ocean University of China has also established Center for Sino-Germany Cooperation in Marine Sciences, Sino-Australian Joint Research Centre for Coastal Management, Sino-Korean Research Center for Marine Development, etc. Currently, the university is promoting the preparation and establishment of the Marine Strategic Alliance with the University of East Anglia and the building of the Sino-Australian Joint Research Centre for Ocean Engineering with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
