University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) is a multidisciplinary university with emphasis in engineering. The University has 37 PhD programs, 4 post-doctorate programs, 118 master-degree programs, and one MBA (Master of Business Administration) program. University of Shanghai for Science and Technology has continuously adjusted and reconstructed its majors and disciplines, which now cover six main disciplines (engineering, science, economics, management, literature and law).
(1). History
University of Shanghai for Science and Technology was originally built by the Northern and Southern Baptists of the United States on 26.5 acres of land purchased in late 1905. The first president of the college, originally known as the Shanghai Baptist College and Seminary, was John Thomas Proctor, a Baptist Missionary appointed by the Board of Trustees in August 1906 during a meeting in Moganshan. Proctor was president and professor of history and philosophy at the college until the fall of 1910 when he was replaced by Dr. F. J. White as acting president. The first Chinese professor at the college was Mr. Tong Tsing-En. The first Chinese president was Dr. Herman C. E. Liu from 1928-1938. University of Shanghai for Science and Technology is the amalgamation of East China University of Technology and Shanghai Institute of Mechanical Technology. The former originated from Shanghai Industry School, set up on the original campus of University of Shanghai, also known as Hujiang University (1906–1952) after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China. The latter originated from Deutsche Medizinschule, created in 1907. Between 1960 and 1994, the school was known as Shanghai Institute of Mechanism. In May 1996, East China University and Shanghai Institute of Mechanical Technology were amalgamated and established as USST. In July 2003, Shanghai Medical Instrumentation College and Shanghai Publishing and Printing College were incorporated into University of Shanghai for Science and Technology. The University of Shanghai for Science and Technology today has become a key university in Shanghai.
(2). Discipline and programs
University of Shanghai for Science and Technology consists of 18 colleges or schools, one teaching faculties; among them, there are 30 research institutes, 12 research centers and 3 research associations. The total number of full-time students is 24600, including 17400 undergraduates, 7200 candidates for Master Degrees and Doctor Degree. In order to meet the need of developing economy and serving the society, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology has continuously adjusted and reconstructed its majors and disciplines, which now cover six main disciplines ( engineering, science, economics, management, literature and law), 59 undergraduate programs. There are 37PhD programs, 4 post-doctorate programs, 118 master-degree programs, and one MBA (Master of Business Administration) program. It also has formed key discipline of municipal level, three key disciplines of Shanghai Education Committee and seven key disciplines of the former Machinery Ministry.
(3). Academic facilities and Scientific research
University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) now has 18 colleges or schools, one teaching faculties; among them, there are 30 research institutes, 12 research centers and 3 research associations. For the purpose of promoting its teaching and ability of serving the society through scientific research, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology has raised its annual research outlay to 384.4 million Yuan including the following projects: “863” projects, “973” basic research projects, the key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation and projects of scientific research at ministerial or provincial level. The total number of its full-time teaching staff is 1098, of which 415 have senior technical and professional titles. There are 111 professors and 282 associate professors, including 50 Ph. D advisors and 280 master advisors.
(4). University of Shanghai for Science and Technology Achievement
Since 2004, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology annual publication of academic papers and books is 1,041. Twenty one of its teachers won the prizes of provincial/ministerial level. The school of optical electrical and computer Science has attached great importance to scientific research. During the years, it has won up to 60 national or regional significant scientific research achievement awards. USST National Science Park has been named, by Shanghai Economic Commission, as “Shanghai Creative Industry Concentration Zone”, which has gathered a number of advanced manufacturing-oriented R & D institutions and enterprises and has served as a platform combining production, learning and research together. Looking ahead, USST is on its way to becoming a top-ranked university in science and technology not only nationally, but worldwide. The USST of tomorrow will move forward on its mission of being “based in Shanghai, facing the world, educating students, and serving society”
(5). Communication and international cooperation
University of Shanghai for Science and Technology has accepted the challenge of developing its undergraduate and graduate programs and is adopting international standards. It has established formal collaborations with more than 80 universities in America, Britain, Germany, Canada, Japan, Australia and other countries throughout the world. Two international joint programs– the Sino-British College and Sino-German College, include resident foreign faculty with whom Chinese and international students study. It has established 13 joint international schools with foreign universities including New York Syracuse University (America), New York Queen College (America), MIT Sloan School of Management (America), University of North Dakota (America), Central Michigan University (America), Hamburg University for Applied Sciences (Germany), Montreal University (Canada), University of Central Lancashire (Britain) and Griffith College (Ireland).
