(1) History
Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology (XAUAT) can dates back to 1895, the year when Tianjin Beiyang School of Western Learning (Beiyang University) was first established. Over the years, the university pooled together the earliest elites in the disciplines of civil engineering, architecture, and municipal engineering in the history of modern Chinese higher education. In 1956, in the third nation-wide restructuring of universities and colleges, the school was named Xi'an Institute of Construction Engineering after integrating and amalgamating departments of civil engineering, architecture, and municipal engineering at the Northeast Institute of Technology, Northwest Institute of Technology, Qingdao Institute of Technology, and South Jiangsu Technical SchThe origin of XAUAT dates back to 1895, the year when Tianjin Beiyang School of Western Learning (Beiyang University) was first established. (2) Discipline and programs
At present, the university has 16 schools and departments offering 56 undergraduate programs to students in China. The university is empowered to enroll students recommended for admission who can undertake the undergraduate-graduate programs consecutively. Apart from the 3 disciplines of architecture, city planning and landscape science which offer a five-year curriculum, the remainder of the disciplines provide four-year undergraduate programs. The university has 9 specialties designated as the national characteristic specialties, namely Architecture, City planning, Civil engineering, Environmental engineering, Building environment and facility engineering, Engineering management, Material science and engineering, Water and wastewater engineering, and Art design. In addition, 11 specialties are provincial characteristic specialties. XAUAT is among the first batch of universities authorized by the State Council to grant doctorate, Master's, and Bachelor's degrees. The university has 5 first-level and 25 second-level disciplines accredited to confer doctoral degrees, 20 first-level and 67 second-level disciplines to confer master's degrees which cover almost all the disciplines at the university. There are 4 centers for post-doctoral studies in architecture, Civil engineering, Environmental science and engineering, Material science and engineering. Moreover there are 3 national key disciplines, viz. Structural engineering, Environmental engineering, Architectural design and theory.
(3) Academic facilities and Scientific research
Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology (XAUAT) has provincial ministry of construction of state key laboratory, state key laboratory of green building in the west and countries international technology cooperation base, national research achievements promotion center, local joint engineering research center, (virtual simulation) experimental teaching demonstration center, 7, 3 grade-a design and research institute. At present, the university has one state technical research and promotion center, one state key-laboratory, three state A-Class designing institutes, four key laboratories and engineering research centers of MOE, one sports culture research base for the General Administration of Sport of China, five Shaanxi provincial key-laboratories, 13 Shaanxi engineering research centers and one Shaanxi university key research base of philosophy social science. These institutes and bases have rendered an important support to the university's scientific research, its personnel training, and the local economic and social development.
(4) Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology Achievement
In recent years, guided by the principles of “upgrading educational and teaching quality, enhancing discipline construction, optimizing resource allocation, and deepening system reform”, the university has launched and implemented 6 basic projects: Campus Construction Projects, an Educational and Teaching Quality Project, a Discipline Construction Project, a Talent Team Construction Project, an Innovation Project, and a Cultural Construction Project. Consequently, the university has led its educational community onto the road of harmonious and fast development, and has reinforced its comprehensive strength. Accordingly, the important indexes used to assess university performance such as the number of academicians, national key disciplines, first-level doctorate programs, centers for post-doctoral studies, doctoral programs, master's programs, the overall ranking of the university, size of the campus and the sum of funds allocated annually to the university have undergone significant breakthroughs and some have been doubled. The university has been selected by the Ministry of Education as one of the first group of universities for the program of “Outstanding Engineers Education and Training Plan”. Moreover, the university is one of the 64 “Pilot Universities/Colleges for Professional Academic Degree Education of Postgraduates”, and one of the 50 “Model Universities/Colleges for Facilitating the Employment of Graduates”.
(5) Communication and international cooperation
XAUAT has been getting in touch with a number of universities in foreign countries and other regions about the possibility of running joint programs of mutual interests in different areas. XAUAT has already run joint programs with a number of universities, such as Kyushu University and Chaoyang University of Technology in Taiwan, Nihon University in Japan, Dachitecture et de Pays age de Bordeaux, Kiev Institute of Construction Engineering, Sunchon National University, and Norwegian University of Science and Technology. All this has proven to be very popular among students. XAUAT has successively established and maintained stable relationship of cooperation with the universities in more than 40 countries and regions such as USA, Japan, Germany, France, Australia and Korea and so on. Remarkable achievements have been made on academic and staff exchange, scientific research to tackle key problems and on promoting friendship.
