Brief Introduction
Founded in 1956, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM) is one of the earliest established higher education institutions for Chinese medicine in the People’s Republic of China. Beijing University of Chinese Medicine is directly under the supervision of China’s Ministry of Education and is the exclusive traditional Chinese medical institution that entered the “211 Project” for national development, a national development project committed to achieving first-class international-level education and scholarship.
(1). History
Beijing University of Chinese Medicine has experienced significant changes since its establishment more than 50 years ago. In 1956, Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and other three institutions of Chinese medicine were established, inaugurating the modern era of Chinese medicine higher education. In 1960, the newly established Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was appointed by China’s Ministry of Education as national priority higher education institution. In 1993, the former Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine became Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, thus providing the university with better opportunities for development. In 1996, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine was appointed to participate in China’s “211 Project”, a national development project committed to providing first-class, international-level education and scholarship. In 2000, the former Beijing University of Chinese Medicine merged with the Beijing College of Acupuncture, Orthopedics and Traumatology. The newly merged Beijing University of Chinese Medicine became a priority institution directly under the supervision of the Ministry of Education. The rearrangement of its institutional structure and the integration of resources strengthened its academic competence.

Beijing University of Chinese Medicine offers degree programs at undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral levels in Chinese Medicine. Today, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine delivers world-class degree programs, training and research across a wide range of subjects and is committed to offer the best possible educational, cultural and social experience for its students. Beijing University of Chinese Medicine is among the first batch of Chinese medical institutions qualified for offering doctoral programs and establishing post-doctoral research stations. There are 3ost-doctoral research stations and 41 programs are all accredited to grant doctoral degrees, 45 programs are all accredited to grant Master degree at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. At present, there are more than 8244 full-time Chinese students and 1234 international students studying TCM at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.
(3). Campus Overview
Beijing University of Chinese Medicine consisting of 15 Schools and Departments owns three campuses respectively located in He Ping District, Wang Jing District and Liang Xiang District. Beijing University of Chinese Medicine owns 3 affiliated hospitals: the Dong Zhi Men Hospital (the First School of Clinical Chinese Medicine), the Dong Fang Hospital (the Second School of Clinical Chinese Medicine), and the Third Affiliated Hospital (the Third School of Clinical Chinese Medicine) and also owns 36 teaching hospitals for all students’ clinical teaching and internship. The library at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine holds a collection of more than 800,000 books; it subscribes yearly to more than 100,000 current periodicals and has a collection of more than 110,000 past issues. In addition, the library has 83,000 on TCM in Chinese and 27,000 on TCM and biomedicine in foreign languages. It also maintains a collection of more than 120 rare TCM classics, which were published in Ming and Qing dynasties, along with subscriptions to more than 40 databases. Beijing University of Chinese Medicine has a number of laboratories directly under the supervision of the Ministry of Education, China’s State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Beijing Municipality.
(4). Affiliated Hospitals
Beijing University of Chinese Medicine owns 3 affiliated hospitals: the Dong Zhi Men Hospital (the First School of Clinical Chinese Medicine), the Dong Fang Hospital (the Second School of Clinical Chinese Medicine), and the Third Affiliated Hospital (the Third School of Clinical Chinese Medicine) and also owns 36 teaching hospitals for all students’ clinical teaching and internship. Dongzhimen Hospital was founded in 1958 and is conveniently located in downtown Beijing. The hospital has 574 beds, more than 356 medical health care professionals, and 81 postgraduate research supervisors. It is a specialized Chinese Medicine hospital that provides integrated Chinese and Western medical treatment. Dongzhimen Hospital has leading competence in the treatment of both common and rare diseases. It serves as Beijing University of Chinese Medicine’s base for training, research and medical practice and also as base for clinical training for TCM professionals.
(5). Significant Achievements
Beijing University of Chinese Medicine publishes state-level, first-class academic periodicals, entitled Journal of Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Modern Chinese Clinical Medicine, Education of Chinese Medicine, and Journal of Traditional Chinese Medical Sciences ( English Version). These are important windows for Chinese medicine exchange. Beijing University of Chinese Medicine has undertaken all kinds of different items of research projects including national "863", "973" project, and National "11th Five-Year" support plan programs. There are many items of projects get the rewards of National Science and Technology Awards.
Communication and Cooperation
In recent years, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine has established fruitful cooperative projects with 103 famous universities and academic groups in 29 countries and regions. At present, there are 1234 international students studying TCM at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.
