Capital University of Physical Education and Sports (CUPES) was established in 1956. (1) History
Capital University of Physical Education and Sports was established in 1956 at Xiannongtan Stadium and named as Beijing Sports School. In 1960, Beijing sports normal college was established on the basis of Beijing sports school. In May 2000, approved by the Ministry of Education, the college changed its name as Capital University of Physical Education and Sports in order to adapt to the development of sports and education.

Capital University of Physical Education and Sports has developed a multi-level, multi-type, and multi-form education pattern. Now, it sets up all the undergraduate majors of sports education designed by MOE: Martial Arts and Chinese Traditional Sports, Sports Coaching, Human Kinesiology, Public Management, Journalism, Guidance and Management of Social Sports, Leisure Sports, Physical Education, Dance Performance, Exercise Rehabilitation, and Sports Economics and Management. . There are 7 programs at the master level, and one at the doctoral level at Capital University of Physical Education and Sports. Capital University of Physical Education and Sports is proud of its outstanding faculty, because of their high academic level, rich teaching experience and strong professional dedication. The existing staffs are more than 498, of which more than 264 full-time teachers, of teachers more than 146 are professors. (4) Great achievements
In 2006, Capital University of Physical Education and Sports was given Excellence Award by Ministry of Education in Undergraduate Education Evaluation. During the period of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, about 2000 students and teachers from CUPES directly participated in organization work, referee work, competition work and volunteer service work of Organizing Committee of Olympic Games. Capital University of Physical Education and Sports has undertaken all kinds of 80 items of research projects including 20 national projects and 60 Beijing municipal projects.
(5) Communication and international cooperation
Capital University of Physical Education and Sports is quite active in cooperation and exchange with foreign countries. School of International Education is the official administrative department in implementing international policies and in coordinating its international exchange and cooperation as well as in enrolling international students. At present, CUPES has signed the joint education agreement with more than 20 universities or research institutes from America, England, Korea, Japan, Finland, Australia, Russia, New Zealand, Belgium, Greece, etc. By exchanging students and visiting scholars, the university intends to build up a higher-level cooperation network with foreign universities based on education and research cooperation.
