Why Study at China Conservatory of Music

China Conservatory of Music is the highest learning institution in China in education and study in Chinese music and specializes in training talents in performing, making and researching Chinese music. Specifically, China Conservatory of Music is an institution that synthesizes the study and research of Chinese traditional music, focusing on performance, composition, theory, and music technology. Chinese music has a long history and a profound tradition. In order to explore the refined traditions of Chinese music and to promote the development of Chinese music, the China Conservatory of Music was officially established on September 21, 1964. The Conservatory therefore offers study programs for secondary school students, undergraduates, research graduates, adults, as well as foreign students.

1. History

China Conservatory of Music was founded in September 21, 1964, form the idea of the principals espoused by Premier Zhou Enlai. The China Conservatory of Music of Music was initially established in 1956 by the merger of the art and music departments of Beijing Normal University, East China Normal University and Northeast Normal University. In 1964 the school adopted its current name. China Conservatory of Music of Music is also called Chinese Conservatory, or China College of Music is a prominent Chinese music conservatory. It was established in 1964 and is currently based in Chaoyang District, Beijing, just outside the city's northern 4th Ring Road.

2. Discipline and Programs

After decades of development, China Conservatory of Music now has nine departments: Musicology, Composition, Chinese Instrumental Music, Vocal Music and Opera, Piano, Orchestra Instrument, Music Education, Conducting, and Art Management.

In addition, there are Departments of Postgrauate Studies, Social Sciences, Adult Education, and the affiliated Music High School, thus forming a multi layered and multi-system educational structure ranging from undergraduate, professional training, graduate programs to continual education. China Conservatory of Music offers training in other fields of music as well as music education in undergraduate and master’s programs. China Conservatory of Music combined the resources of the Central Conservatory Chinese Music Department, the Beijing Arts Academy Music Department, and the China Music Research Institute, as well as bringing together renowned musicians and scholars in the field from across the country. The Conservatory therefore offers study programs for secondary school students, undergraduates, research graduates, adults, as well as foreign students.

3. Academic Facilities and Scientific Research

China Conservatory of Music provides students with first-class teaching facilities, such as multimedia studios for music creation, electronic facilities for computer composing, recording studios,  first ever "all-Steinway" piano institute in Asia, two hundred practicing rooms and three hundred pianos at the students' disposal. All these form a sound basis for the quality of teaching. 

4. China Conservatory of Music Achievement

Currently, the China Conservatory of Music has over 300 staff and faculty, more than 120 assistant and full professors. With its talented faculty and dedicated staff, the Conservatory has produced thousands of graduates since its establishment, many of whom have become renowned scholars, artists, and performers active on the national and international stage. Over the years, graduates from the China Conservatory of Music have achieved good results and some of them won first or second prizes in important competitions at home and abroad, such as in Tchaikovsky international vocal music competition, Mazurka international vocal music competition, and Bulgier International vocal music competition, this have been increased the recognition of to China Conservatory of Music and to the nation as well. 

5. Communication and International Cooperation

China Conservatory of Music recruits students annually throughout the country, and at the same time admits foreign students across from all over the world. Brilliant talents are selected and admitted into the Conservatory through strict examinations. To further the development of international exchange, the China Conservatory of Music of Music has established working relationships and exchange programs with music institutions in various countries and regions such as Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Korea, United States, Canada, France, Germany, Britain, Austria, and Australia. Each year, the conservatory invites over ten scholars and musicians to give lectures and master classes, and regularly sends its own professors and students abroad to teach and perform.  In 1993, China Conservatory of Music began to recruit foreign students who come to China to study. Since then hundreds of foreign students from all over the world have been trained at the conservatory. Through more than forty years of development, China Conservatory of Music has only consolidated its leading position in preserving and developing Chinese music, but has become a bridge between China and the outside world which helps the other countries get to know Chinese music better and better in the new century.
