China Pharmaceutical University (CPU), situated in the historical and cultural city of Nanjing, is one of the “211 project” key universities affiliated to the Ministry of Education of China. (1). History
China Pharmaceutical University (CPU), has been known for its long history and its leadership role in China’s pharmaceutical academic field. The University was founded in 1936 as China’s first independent four-year National College of Pharmacy. The University integrated the pharmacy schools from Qilu University and Soochow University in 1952 to establish the East China College of Pharmacy. It was renamed as Nanjing College of Pharmacy in 1956. In 1986, the current China Pharmaceutical University was established on the basis of the former Nanjing College of Pharmacy and the then newly established Nanjing College of Traditional Chinese Pharmacy. In 1996 the university was selected as national key university and joined the 211 project, four years later 2000 the university subordinated to the ministry of education of China.
The University insists educational philosophy of “excellence in academics” and strives to create a student-centered collaborative learning environment, with an aim to improve knowledge, skills and personal quality for pharmaceutical talents.

China Pharmaceutical University (CPU), provides a wide variety of disciplines including Sciences, Medicine, Engineering, Economics, Management, Arts and Law. CPU consists of 13 schools and independent departments that offer 24 bachelor’s degree programs, 5 associate programs, 37 Master degree programs, 24 Doctoral degree programs and 2 Post-doctoral mobile stations. In 2008’s national discipline evaluation by Chinese Ministry of Education, our pharmacy discipline ranked No. 1 and Traditional Chinese Pharmacy discipline ranked No. 3. In 2010’s ESI statistics, our chemistry, pharmacology and toxicology programs ranked the world’s top 1%, this highlights the leading role of some specific disciplines in China Pharmaceutical University. Our “Theory and Technology of New Drug Discovery” project has been supported by “985 Innovation Platforms for Priority Disciplines” of China since 2011.The University has the world’s largest gathering of pharmaceutical experts and professors. The number of our faculty and staff is more than 1,400, including 859 full-time teachers, in which 80% have attained doctoral and master's degree. China Pharmaceutical University hosts more than 15000 full-time students, in which 12000 are bachelor’s or associate degree candidates, 3300 are postgraduates.
(3). Academic facilities and Scientific research
China Pharmaceutical University (CPU) is composed of two campuses, namely the Xuanwumen Campus and the Jiangning Campus, which cover a total area of about 2200 mu (146.6 hectares). With an international view and equipped with the advantages of complete disciplines in pharmacy/traditional Chinese pharmacy, the university is developing interdisciplinary research and increasing its innovative power. The University has founded a national key lab for natural active ingredients and drug efficacy, 19 national/ministry/province-level key labs, engineering technical centers and innovative platforms for pre-clinical research and development of innovative drugs. The Drug Research Institute promotes the overall advancement of the university’s research and development of new drugs. Two organizations have been selected into Collaborative Innovation Centers of Jiangsu Universities, including Biomedical Collaborative Innovation Center and Modern Chinese Pharmacy Collaborative Innovation Center. Since 2006, the university has undertaken 749 national/ministry/province-level research projects and won numerous research funds, being among the top medical universities of the nation. In the nation’s Innovative New Drug major project, the university has attained 40 branch projects and 215 million Yuan funding, being No.1 among all universities of the nation.
(4). China Pharmaceutical University Achievement
Since 2006, China Pharmaceutical University researchers have applied for 750 patents and attained 409 of them. 11 new drugs have been approved for clinical research and 9 new drugs have been national certified. 5375 research papers have been published in core journals, in which 3100 can be retrieved from SCI and EI. China Pharmaceutical University researchers have won 1 First Prize and 3 Second Prizes of National Science and Technology Progress Award, 27 Science and Technology Progress Award at province- or ministry-level. In the last decade, 8457 cooperation agreements have been signed between China Pharmaceutical University and pharmaceutical enterprises. In 2010’s ESI statistics, pharmacology and toxicology, chemistry, as well as clinical pharmacy programs ranked the world’s top 1%. Among China’s national medical universities, China Pharmaceutical University is the only one that has won First Prize of National Teaching Achievements for consecutively three times. Graduate employment rate has always ranked top among MOE-affiliated universities and local colleges in Jiangsu Province.
(5). Communication and international cooperation
China Pharmaceutical University (CPU) is the earliest institution authorized by the Chinese Ministry of Education to admit full-time pharmacy students, continuing education students and senior visiting scholars from overseas. It is also one of the higher educational institutions in the mainland for students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. So far, its students come from 57 countries over the world and are on different levels: doctoral, masters, undergraduate and non-degree. The University has established sister-institution relationship with 23 universities overseas and has signed intercollegiate academic exchange agreements with universities and research institutions in 27 countries and regions. Besides, China Pharmaceutical University has academic cooperation agreements or academic links with universities and research institutions in more than 40 countries and regions.
