Fudan University Shanghai Medical College, founded in 1927 by Dr. Fuqing Yan—a distinguished Chinese medical educator and scholar in public health, has a long-standing reputation of excellence in medical teaching, clinical professional training and medical research, which is consistently ranked among the national leading medical university with 88-year history in pursuit of academic excellence as well as devotion and serving for country. It remained the name of Shanghai Medical University till 2002 when it merged with Fudan University. Fudan University Shanghai Medical College currently has 6,802 enrolled students including 1,579 doctoral candidates (10 overseas students), 2,014 Master degree students (48 overseas students), 2,504 undergraduates (154 overseas students), The College boasts a faculty of 455 full-time teachers and 97 full-time researchers, among whom 351 are of Senior Professional Title. Fudan University Shanghai Medical College is located to the east of the prosperous region of Xujiahui CBD (the school of pharmacy relocated in Zhangjiang Campus in 2009) and covers an area of 190,000m2, including the east and west garden on both sides of Dong’an Road, the School of Nursing, Institute of Radiation Medicine, and other scattered land.

4. Medical Programs and Medical Degrees of Bachelor/Undergraduate, Master/Postgraduate and Doctoral/PHD Degrees

Fudan University Shanghai Medical College confers bachelor’s degrees in 10 academic disciplines: clinical medicine (8 years), clinical medicine (5 years), clinical medicine (MBBS, 6 years, taught in English), basic medicine, forensic medicine, preventive medicine, public management (especially on public health services), pharmacy, clinical pharmacy, and nursing; vocational degree in 1 discipline: nursing; Level I doctoral fellowships in 5 research stations: basic medicine, clinical medicine, public health and preventive medicine, integrative medicine, and pharmacy; doctoral degrees in 68 academic disciplines (with 4 of them established by the University itself); confers master’s degrees in 45 academic disciplines (with 7 of them established by the University itself). MBBS Overview

To promote international education, Fudan University Shanghai Medical College began enrolling international students in the English-taught undergraduate medical program-MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) in fall 2008. The program aims to produce high-caliber medical graduates with solid medical knowledge, competent clinical skills, and professionalism, while giving due consideration to the possible needs for them to serve in countries outside of China. Graduates of the program will have the ability to work in medical and health institutions, making meaningful contributions to the areas of patient care, education, and research.

The program is taught completely in English and follows the principles of consolidating academic knowledge, with emphasis on technical skills, interdisciplinary studies, and clinical practice.

Offered by Fudan University Shanghai Medical College, this program is open to international students intending to pursue the science and practice of medicine. Students who excel will have the opportunity to participate in overseas clinical internship programs. After completing the required number of credits, students will be conferred a diploma from Fudan University, and qualified students will receive a degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). Graduates will have the opportunity to register for medical licensing exams in accordance with the requirements of the relevant regulatory bodies of the countries in which they choose to practice.

5. Affiliated Hospitals

Fudan University Shanghai Medical College has 11 affiliated hospitals: Zhongshan Hospital, Huashan Hospital, Children’s Hospital, the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, Eye and ENT Hospital, Shanghai Cancer Center, Huadong Hospital, Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center, The Fifth People’s Hospital of Shanghai, Jinshan Hospital, Pudong Hospital. There are another 3 hospitals under construction in full swing to become affiliated hospitals to Fudan University, which are Minhang District Mental Health Center, Qingpu District Center Hospital and Minhang District Center Hospital.

6. International Student Education

International student education is an important direction in Fudan University’s turn towards internationalization. Fudan was one of the first universities to accept foreign exchange students since the Communist Revolution. Fudan was the first university in the nation to found an exchange student center in 2003, and the whole school worked towards establishing exchanges. It was the first school in the nation to promote uniformity in management of study for foreign students, establishing a foreign exchange student education system that links Fudan with the world while still according with the conditions of development in China.

Foreign exchange students have already become an important component of Fudan’s school culture, and they participate extensively in all areas of study, practice, and community organizations, with 19 officially registered foreign exchange student clubs. The Fudan University Foreign Exchange Student Alumni Association has definite influence among international alumni.

Shanghai Medical College’s near- to mid-term goals are to build a comprehensive medical curriculum founded on an organ/system model; centered on the student, guided by clinical medicine, breaking the limits of clinical, theoretical, and preventative medicine and pharmacology; to build platforms for the medical core curriculum and for teaching of experimental medicine; to fully bring the process of talent development to the medical humanities education; to effectively promote the synthesis of basic medicine with clinical and medical science, as well as the interdisciplinary study of medical and non-medical domains, persistently transforming medical concepts, strengthening the development of priority subject areas, introducing new priority subject areas, consolidating the leading role of medicine and life medicine in China; elevating the international competitiveness of the affiliated hospitals’ medical treatment and research, and making a core contribution to the key city of Shanghai by building a medical center which ranks among the best in Asia.
