Brief Introduction
Guizhou Medical University (GMU) was Established in 1938, a non-profit public higher education institution recognized by the Department of Education, a medium-sized coeducational higher education institution with courses and programs leading to officialy recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees in several study areas, also provides several academic and non-academic facilities services to students including a library.
1.History
Guizhou Medical University was the first batch of universities in China to be approved by the Ministry of Education to grant master degree in 1981 and one of the two universities to grant doctoral degrees in Guizhou in 2003. GMU was evaluated as one of the three provincial key universities in 2005. Later，GMU has established post-doctoral research institute in 2010 and was crowned as the sole Medical Doctor degree granting organization.
2. Construction of Teaching Units
Guizhou Medical University holds18 teaching units: 13 schools , 1 division and 4 departments(School of Basic Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health, Continuing Education, Graduate School, Nursing, Laboratory Science, Imaging,Stomatology, Sports and Health, Medicine and Health Management, Medical Humanitarians, Department of Social Science, Anesthesia, Biomedical Engineering, Forensic Science and Foreign Language Education). GMU currently hosts 1 doctoral program covering 7 sub-majors, 1 postdoctoral research institute, 53 master programs, and 33 undergraduate programs. GMU supervises over 9 affiliated hospitals, 7 collaborating hospitals, 1 collaborating clinic medicine school, 23 teaching hospitals and 15 training hospitals.
3.Strong Faculty
Guizhou Medical University was renowned for its 4 national tertiary education units, 1 national laboratory teaching exemplary center, 1 national teaching exemplary team, 3 national key secondary education majors, 3 key laboratories approved by the Ministry of Education, 7 provincial key majors, 5 provincial clinical key majors, 1 Ministry of Education approved Development and Application Center of Ethnodrugs, 2 provincial key laboratories, 8 provincial exemplary undergraduate majors, 4 provincial teaching exemplary centers and 2 provincial teaching exemplary teams. Currently, it has an enrollment of over 15000 full time students with the proportion of over 25% master and doctoral program students.
4. Great Medical College library
Guiyang Medical College library was established in 1938. Now the library area in at over 13420.32 square meters, contains over 540,000 volumes of books(including 100,000 volumes of English , Japanese, Russian and Germany books or journals),and electronic databases including WanFang database(8 years)、Medline(21 years)、CBM(26 years ),CMCC(6 years),CBD(20 years),VIP(14 years),OVID(including 4 core collections),OVID LWW,EBSCO etc. At the same time , depending on the China Education Scientific Research Network and Campus Area Network, we can share the electric materials with the other college or university of Guizhou Province, including the China academic journal database ,China d-library etc. The materials which the library holds worth more than 6,800,000 RMB. Now there are 31 staffs in the library, including 1 doctor, 3 professors, 9 associated professors.
The library of Guiyang Medical College is member of the China university medicine library community association, China medicine retrieval teaching research society, Guizhou Province library institute,Guizhou Province information institute.It is also the secretary library of Guizhou Province university library committee, the center of the Guizhou Province medicine information. As the third grade of the China medicine information center， It provides the services of the information for the whole province. It is in charge of the retrieval teaching for the students of our college and the medicine staff of the Guizhou Province. The information center of the library provides the medicine scientific subject research of the Guizhou Province. There are 6 staffs who have been trained for the retrieval technical personnel and got the certificate. It provides the information for the developing of the medicine research of our province. It has been praised by the reader and the user and been awarded for the second prize of the Guizhou Province scientific information production
5. Scientific Research
Guizhou Medical University established the Drug Research and Development Center forming a hard-working, united, exploiting and innovating scientific research team. In 2005, under the support of Guizhou Provincial Committee of Science and Technology, the Guizhou Center for Research Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ethnic Medicines (GCRDTCMEM) was founded in GMU. The Center covers a laboratory area of about 2500 m2 on which facilities valued more than 10 million yuan are equiped to meet the increasing research needs. In the past several years of TCM modernization, the Center has attracted more than 10 million yuan research funds and enjoys a batch of original technologies with independent intellectual property rights in a wide range of key technological areas. It also has Ethnic Group Gene Research,Aim to publicize the uniqueness of Guizhou, the research team undertakes studies on genetic diversity and relevant disease genes in ethnic groups in Guizhou. The research team has systematically conducted studies on more than 20 STR and SNP loci of Y chromosome (Paternal inheritance) and mitochondria DNA (maternal inheritance) polymorphism locus in some ethnic groups. The research team has won 24 research projects ranging from national, ministerial and provincial level, with a total research fund of RMB 1.8 million and more than 90 research papers have been published in both domestic and international journals, of which 1 was included in SCI, 40 were published in key journals. So far the team has won 2 prizes for science and technology achievement from Guizhou province and Guiyang Municipality .
6.Affiliated Hospitals
Guizhou Medical University has 9 directly affiliated hospitals: The Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University,The Second Affiliated Hospital ,The Third Affiliated Hospital , the Affiliated Cancer Hospital, the Baiyun Hospital, the Affiliated Wudang Hospital, the Affiliated stomatology Hospital, the Affiliated Guian Hospital, the Affiliated Hospital, the Zunyi affiliated Hospital.
7.Communication and Cooperation
Guizhou Medical University With ever-improving teaching and research competence, GMU enjoyed bigger reputation and influence. In recent years, GMU has hosted more than 10 national academic conferences, established fine cooperation with renowned universities in the U. S., Sweden, Japan and other 9 countries. With a total 170 visits paid by scholars and faculty from these countries and 213 domestic visits came to GMU for international and domestic cooperation. GMU also emphasize on grooming its own talents by sending 400 visits to abroad for international conference and study. With ever-expanding global communication and collaboration, it has enhanced the teaching and research competence of the teaching faculty of GMU. Meanwhile, the university is an active participant of Chun Hui Project proposed by the Ministry of Education, valued research partner of Karolinska Institute of Sweden and NIH of U. S.
