Nanjing Normal University (NNU) is located in Nanjing, the ancient capital of six dynasties in history. It is a key university of Jiangsu Province and one of the 211 Project institutions.
(1). History
The history of Nanjing Normal University can be traced back to Sanjiang Normal Institute, which was established by Zhang Zhidong, Governor-General of Jiangsu and Jiangxi, in 1902. It was renamed Liangjiang Excellent Normal Institute in 1905, and evolved into National Nanjing Higher Normal School in 1914. In 1920, National Southeast University was established on the basis of disciplines of National Nanjing Higher Normal School, and in 1923, National Nanjing Higher Normal School merged into it. In 1927, National Southeast University, Hehai Engineering University, and other six national schools of professional college lever or above, integrated into the Fourth Zhongshan University. It was renamed Jiangsu University, then National Zhongyang University, and evolved into National Nanjing University, which turned out to be Nanjing University in 1950. The other source of Nanjing Normal University is Huiwen Academy established in 1888. In 1910, Huiwen Academy and Hongyu Academy merged into Private Jinling University. In 1951, Private Jinling University and Private Jinling Women Arts and Science College, which was established in 1913 and renamed Jingling Women University in 1914, integrated to National Jinling University. In January 1984, it was named Nanjing Normal University, and entered the national construction of key universities under the 211 project. In March 2000, Nanjing Dynamics Higher Professional College merged into the university. At present, Nanjing Normal University has been striving to set up a comprehensive university well-known for the educational and scientific research.
(2). Discipline and programs
Nanjing Normal University has 25 colleges and schools in the university that offer 146 doctoral programs, 246 master’s degree programs and 80 undergraduate degree programs. Nanjing Normal University embraces diverse branches of learning, such as humanities, social sciences, science, engineering, art and so on. There were 25,000 full-time students in 2011. Recently, Nanjing Normal University opens International Economics and Trade Program for international students, this program provides students with a firm grasp of the theory and tools of economics and finance and the functioning of the international economic system. These skills are an important component of modern training in international affairs. In addition Food Science and technology major have been started as a key program, this leads to a Bachelor of Science degree. It provides an integrated curriculum that blends fundamental science with the more applied aspects of the science and technology of foods. The program includes core courses in the microbiology and safety of foods, their processing and engineering, the chemistry of foods and food ingredients, and means of characterizing their sensory attributes.
(3). Academic facilities and Scientific research
The Nanjing Normal University claims three campuses, namely "Suiyuan campus", which is renowned as “The Most Beautiful Campus in the East”, "Xianlin campus" and "Zijin campus" with a total area of more than 2,000,100 square meters (or more than 200 hectares). NNU library, the third largest in Jiangsu Province, claims more than 2,500,000 books. Jingwen Library on Xianlin Campus is the largest university library in Jiangsu province with the most advanced equipments and facilities. With the support of the government and society, over 20,000 faculty members shall strive for the course of shaping Nanjing Normal University into a comprehensive university noted for education, international exchange and scientific research. Nanjing Normal University is the National Base for Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, and the first National Base for Teaching Chinese to Overseas Chinese. The University has 4 Training Centers including the UNESCO international Rural Education Research and Training Center.

International students have made their way to Nanjing Normal University since 1965 and so far more than 20,000 international students have completed their study in Nanjing Normal University. As one of the base of “Chinese Government Scholarship Students Foundation Program”, Nanjing Normal University is famous for her outstanding program of Teaching Chinese Language as A Second Language.
