1.History
The history of Qingdao University dates back to 1909. In 1908, representatives of China and Germany, Zhang Zhidong, Minister of Education of the Qing Empire, and Otto Frank, Sinologist from the University of Hamburg, negotiated to establish a joint college in Qingdao. As start-up fund, the German government invested 600,000 marks, and the Chinese government 40,000 marks. On September 12, 1909, German-Chinese College was officially opened. The first President was Georg Keiper, German Geologist and Navy Officer. Due to the war, German-Chinese College closed in 1914. In 1922, in order to continue higher education, the Northern Government intends to set up a comprehensive university in Qingdao. In 1924, Private Qingdao University was founded, disciplines included arts, science, law, business, engineering, medicine, agriculture, and forestry.
In 1929, National Qingdao University was founded on the basis of Private Qingdao University, adding literature, education, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and other disciplines. In 1932, National Qingdao University was renamed as National Shandong University. In 1937, the Sino-Japanese War broke out. In 1938, the school was closed. The war ended in 1945, and National Shandong University resumed in Qingdao, merging Qingdao Medical School and its affiliated hospitals. In 1949, National Shandong University was renamed as Shandong University. In 1956, the School of Medicine was separated from Shandong University, and formed an independent establishment known as the Qingdao Medical College. 1958, Shandong University moved to Jinan. In 1985, Qingdao University was re-established, with the educational goal of "high level distinctive university," and disciplines of arts, science, engineering, business and many other subjects. School construction and development were supported financially by the central government, and also academically supported by Nankai University, Tianjin University, University of Science and Technology of China, and Shandong University. In 1993, Qingdao University merged Shandong Textile Engineering Institute, Qingdao Medical College and Qingdao Normal College.
2. Discipline and programs
Qingdao University is comprised of 26 colleges and 100 majors with undergraduate programs covering literature, history, philosophy, natural sciences, law, economics, management, engineering, medical science, education, art, and more. There are 35 doctoral programs and 175 master’s programs. Current enrollment is over 44,000 students. Qingdao University attaches great importance to international exchanges and cooperation, taking a welcoming policy as the important developmental strategy of the university as Qingdao University moves toward internationalization. 3. Academic facilities and scientific research
We have 2,000 teachers, including one member of Chinese Academy of Science, two members of Chinese Academy of Engineering, and another 7 external academicians, 281 full professors, 868 associate professors. International exchange programs have been established with more than 40 universities and regions, including the USA, Britain, Germany, Japan, Russia, Canada, Australia, etc. There are 25 provincial key disciplines, laboratories, and engineering research centers, and 66 specialties with doctor and master programs.
4. Great achievements
During 2007-2010, Qingdao University has achieved 125 items of the National Natural Science Fund, 183 items of scientific research reaching the provincial and ministerial level, of which 51 national items, 23 items of over the provincial and ministerial level, 22 invention patents, 448 academic books published by Qingdao University, 10041 academic thesis, of which 910 articles chosen by SCI、EI、ISTP. In 2007, “Holzer quantized resistance standard” worked by Professor Zhang Zhonghua, Professor Lu Darong and Professor Chi Zongtao has won first prize of national scientific progress and 10 items of provincial social science. Faculties of Qingdao University always try their best to make greater achievements.
5. Communication and international cooperation
