Brief Introduction
Southwest Medical University was founded in 1951 and is a government university recognized by both the Chinese government and the World Health Organization. It was authorized by the Degree Committee of the State Council to confer Master’s Degrees in 1993. In 2006, it got “Excellent in the Undergraduate Teaching Proficiency Evaluation” from Ministry of Education.
It is one of the “Top 5 Model Universities in Electronic Education” in Sichuan province. For more than 60 years, the college has trained 110,000 students, and has evolved into a large-scale college of teaching, medical care and scientific research. It is characterized for combining Traditional Chinese Medicine with Western Medicine in various ways and at different levels.
(1). History
Southwest Medical University is situated in the city of Luzhou, which is a National Famous Historical and Cultural City, a National Clean City and a National Forest City. Southwest Medical University, formerly Southwest Sichuan South Healer’s school, was founded in 1951. In 1959, university changed its name to Luzhou Medical College, in 1978, upgraded to Luzhou Medical College and in 2015 was renamed as Sichuan Medical College. In December 2015, the school is known as Southwest Medical University.

Southwest Medical University has 12 departments. It has 25 majors, among which there are 3 national special majors, 6 provincial special majors and 23 provincial key courses. It has 3 key institutes, 2 national human resource bases, 2 provincial human resource bases.
Undergraduate majors and directions: Clinical Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Oral Medicine, Nursing, Anesthesiology, Medical testing, Material Medicine, Epidemiology, Medical Photography, Chinese Herbs, Neurology, Otolaryngology, and Medical English.
(3). Campus Overview
At present there are more than 15,000 students studying in Southwest Medical University, including 291 international students, 1,309 postgraduate students, 14,420 graduate students and also some short-term international students. The international students come from North America, south Asian countries, Africa countries, and the Chinese students come from 31 provinces.
The university consists of two parts--- the Zhongshan campus and the Chengbei campus covering entirely an area of 2011 Mu in total. The old campus -- Zhongshan Campus -- is located on Mt. Zhongshan and is surrounded by the Yangtze River and the Tuo River, with a lot of green camphor trees, birds and flowers. The new campus-Chengbei Campusis newly constructed with modern facilities.
(4). Affiliated Hospitals
Southwest Medical University has 3 affiliated hospitals, which are: The Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University, the Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital of Southwest Medical University and the Dental Hospital of Southwest Medical University. There is also a nursing school, a Pharmaceutical Factory, 13 non-subordinating hospitals and 77 teaching hospitals which total 20,000 clinical beds. Among them, the Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University is a "National Class A-Grade III Hospital", and is one of the biggest and most advanced hospitals in Southwest China. It has 2,920 staff (495 are professors and associate professors) and 60 departments with 2200 clinical beds. Every year it accepts 100,000 inpatients and 1,100,000 outpatients. The separating operation performed on a pair of Siamese twins in 2004 was the first case done in Sichuan. Till now, the hospital has carried out four Siamese twins’ separation operation.
(5). Significant Achievements
In recent 5 years, Southwest Medical University has obtained more than 400 bureau level scientific research projects. Besides, Southwest Medical University has acquired 110 provincial scientific research projects. 9169 dissertations have been published, and 2303 dissertations have been published on Chinese core journals and 350 papers have been collected by SCI, EI and ISTP;78 academic monographs have been published. Moreover, Southwest Medical University has obtained 48 national patent authorization and have been awarded 136 Science and Technology Progress Award of different levels, among which are 23 awards with provincial or ministerial level, one second-rate award and one third-rate award of Chinese Medical Science and Technology and three first-grade awards of Provincial Progress of Science and Technology.
Communication and Cooperation
Southwest Medical University has established international exchange and cooperation relationship with 26 universities, such as The University of Sheffield, Ruprecht-Karls-Universitaet Heidelberg, The University of Iowa and etcand institutes in 13 countries including Japan, Germany and the U.S.A. The university employs long-term foreign teachers to teach English language and medical subjects, and invites short-term visiting scholars to give guest lectures.
