Tianjin Polytechnic University (TJPU) is a state-run full-time institution of higher education, which is jointly financed by Ministry of Education and Tianjin Municipal Government. In 2003, Tianjin Polytechnic University received outstanding marks in the “Undergraduate Program Evaluation” sponsored by Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China.
1. History
Tianjin Polytechnic University (TJPU) has a long history, with its earliest departments established in 1912 as Beijing Industry Specialized School Machine Woven Division. In 1929, it renamed as Peking University Engineering College Machine Woven Department and in 1938, the university changed its name to Northwest Associated University the Northwest Institute of Technology Textile Department. In 1946, TJPU was named as National Peiyang Universities Textile Department. Combined with Hebei University of Technology Textile Department, it became Tianjin University Textile Department in 1951. Together with Tianjin Textile Industry School and Sichuan Leshan Technical and Art School Cotton Textile Division, the university became Hebei Textile Engineering College in 1958. In 1968, it was named as Tianjin Textile Engineering College and combined with Tianjin Economics Management Cadre Institute; the university was established as Tianjin Polytechnic University in 2000. Merging with Tianjin Industrial Vocational and Technical College in 2004, TJPU came into being the present Tianjin Polytechnic University.
2. Overview of Campus
Tianjin Polytechnic University consists of 16 colleges, offering bachelor’s, master’s and doctor’s degrees. It has 28,000 full-time students. The 460-acre-strong new campus has been completed in the scenery spot of Xiqing District.
3. Discipline Construction and Degree Programs
Tianjin Polytechnic University is a multidisciplinary teaching and research university, which offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degrees in science and engineering, arts, liberal arts, management, economics and law.
Tianjin Polytechnic University is the frontrunner in China in the scientific research on textile composite materials, hollow fiber membrane separating technology, special functional fiber materials, textile oiling agent, semiconductor lighting, and production of electromechanical equipment integration, etc. The university has over 60 research institutions in cooperation with some famous enterprises, including Motian Membrane Science and Technology Company, Functional Fiber Development Centre, etc.
4. Strong Faculty
Currently, there are 1,600 full-time teachers in Tianjin Polytechnic University, of whom more than 800 are professors and associate professors. Tianjin Polytechnic University has also specially engaged over 50 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering and renowned foreign scholars as visiting scholars and part-time professors.
5. Great Achievements
The motto of Tianjin Polytechnic University is “rigorous, strict, realistic and truthful”. In the past 3 years, TJPU has undertaken nearly 1,000 scientific research projects on various levels, among which 300 have gained National Science and Technology Progress Award, Invention Award and Science & technology Progress Award. Most of the products of the research have been nationally or internationally patented.
