Brief Introduction
Established in 1958, Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TUTCM), which is located in Tianjin, is one of the earliest universities of TCM founded in China. TUTCM commits itself to the unearthing and collecting of traditional Chinese medicine, personnel training and scientific research. Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has a complete set of specialties and a distinguished teaching faculty. TUTCM offers Bachelor, Master and PhD programs, with a leading comprehensive strength among China’s colleges of TCM.
1. Campus Overview
Located at the bank of Tuanjie Lake, Jinghai County, Tianjin Municipal city, the new campus of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine is under construction, which occupies an area of more than 173 hectares with a floor space of over 600,000 m2. Upon construction, it will become the largest museum and botanic garden of TCM as well as the most advanced science park and international education center of TCM.
2. Strong Faculty
Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TUTCM) has an excellent learning environment, with a distinguished faculty of over 3,600 staff members, including 3 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, more than 900 teachers with senior professional and technical titles, 120 doctoral supervisors and more than 890 master’s supervisors. Over the past years, TUTCM has always adhered to the school motto “stick to medical ethics, self-improvement, inheritance and innovation”, and has cultivated a large group of medical talents among whom Shi Xuemin and Zhang Boli are excellent representatives, thus making great contributions to the course of traditional medicine and health and the internationalization of TCM.
3. Discipline Construction and Programs
Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine enjoys 2 national key disciplines which are Acupuncture & Moxibustion & Tuina of Chinese Medicine and Chinese Internal Medicine, 23 key disciplines formulated by State Administration of TCM, and 5 key disciplines formulated by Tianjin municipal city in its 12th Five-Year Plan.
There are 20 colleges, departments, schools and institutions, including College of TCM, College of Chinese Materia Medica, College of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, College of Nursing, College of TCM Engineering, College of Humanities and Management, International Education College and etc., covering from undergraduates, masters, doctoral programs and post-doctoral fellowships. Acupuncture & Moxibustion and Tuina, TCM Internal Medicine are the state key programs. At present time, there are over 12,000 students enrolled in various programs in the University.
4. Affiliated Hospitals
Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine owns six affiliated hospitals and 30 teaching hospitals, which serve as important centers for clinical practice. The First and Second Teaching Hospitals of TUTCM are ranked First Class and national drug clinic research center, together have over 2,500 beds and 16 clinical teaching and research offices. The First Teaching Hospital has been approved by the state as the largest Acupuncture & Moxibustion center in China, National Clinical Research Center of Acupuncture & Moxibustion and Provincial Demonstration Hospital of TCM. The Second Teaching Hospital has a Research Center of TCM Rare Diseases, with treatment and research on Gynecology and Encephalopathy. The two teaching hospitals are well equipped with modern facilities and doctors possess great skill in techniques. Both hospitals have excellent reputations and are trusted by the more than 10,000 out-patients whom they serve daily.
5. Great Achievements
In recent three years, Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has added 408 subjects of provincial level and above, 189 national projects, including the 20 major science and technology projects of "creation of major new drugs", 11 projects of “973 Plan”, 1 project of “863 Plan”, 140 projects of “National Natural Science Fund Project” (including 2 key projects), 3 international cooperation projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 12 projects of “national technology support project”, 1 project of the National Social Science Fund. Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has been awarded 43 awards of provincial level and above, including 1 first prize and 1 second prize of the national science and technology progress award, 1 first prize of science and technology progress award of Ministry of Education, 2 first prizes of Tianjin science and technology progress award and 5 awards of the national teaching achievements.
6. Communication and Cooperation
International University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (IUTCM), authorized by the State Education Committee of the People’s Republic of China, was established in 1992 in TUTCM, and has become the national center for foreign students in TCM education. Each year there are more than 2,000 international students from 60 countries/areas studying in the university. IUTCM has established cooperation with universities, research and medical institutions from more than 50 countries/areas and enjoys a high reputation. It hosts the Teaching Instructive Committee of Traditional Chinese Medicine by Ministry of Education (MOE) and Educational Instruction Committee (EIC) of World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (WFCMS). It is Educational Aid Center for Africa and Asia authorized by MOE, TCM International Cooperation Center by State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SATCM) and National Center for International Research authorized by Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST).
