Xi'an Jiaotong University School of Medicine, founded in 1937, has a long history of nearly 80 years and enjoys a high reputation both at home and abroad. 1. Long History
Xi'an Jiaotong University School of Medicine, which used to be the School of Medicine of National Peking University, was founded in 1937. It was renamed Xi'an Medical University in 1985. After the affiliation of Xi'an Medical University with Xi'an Jiaotong University in April, 2000, it was given the name "Xi'an Jiaotong University School of Medicine". Famous for the Unity, Diligence, Preciseness and Innovation as its tradition, the school is like a cradle which has cultivated advanced medical experts in the Northwest region of China. It is the only top medical science school directly attached to the Ministry of Health in the Northwest region, as well as a branch of Academy of Medical Science in China. About 50,000 advanced medical experts have been cultivated in 70 years since its founding.
2. Begin to enroll medical international students
In 1995, former Xi'an Medical University established the Program of Clinical Medicine for International Students and began to enroll qualified international students, aiming to produce clinicians and doctors to serve in clinics and hospitals. Xi'an Jiaotong University School of Medicine is the first university that adopts English medium teaching throughout the country. Currently, nearly 500 international students from Pakistan, Nepal, Canada, Iran, Sudan and other countries are studying medicine in Xi'an Jiaotong University School of Medicine.
The university pioneered with the initiation of a totally English medium program for the international undergraduates of Clinical Medicine (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, MBBS) in 1995. Then the University expanded to open English medium programs of BDS (Bachelor of Dentistry Surgery) and Pharmacy. The school has accumulatively recruited more than 2000 foreign students from 63 countries, which ranks the first in the whole country.
3. Discipline Construction and Achievements
Through the pain taking efforts and hard work of many generations, the college has developed a collective ability for administration. At present, students on campus are over 4500, including 400 doctoral students, 900 post graduates and 3500 undergraduates. The school has excellent and experienced faculty as well as working staff, and the number has been over 4000 (staff in the affiliated hospitals also included). It has more than 620 professors and associate professors, 81 doctoral mentors, 13 experts who have made outstanding contributions on the state and provincial level and besides, 35 domestic and overseas visiting professors (3 are members of Chinese Academy of Sciences). There are 29 departments (18 clinical departments included); 3 Clinical Teaching Hospitals: The First Affiliated Hospital, The Second Affiliated Hospital and The Affiliated Dental Hospital; 6 centers (Biological Medicine R&E Center, Long-Distance Medicine Center, All-Division Medicine Center, Medical Information Center, Animal Experimentation Center and Medical Testing and Training Center); 27 Graduate Schools; 1 keystone lab belonging to Ministry of Education, 2 keystone labs belonging to Ministry of Health and 3 keystone labs at Provincial level; 2 keystone subjects as Physiology and Medical Jurisprudence at State level and another 7 keystone subjects at Provincial level. Meanwhile the School of Medicine has 2 first-level research stations for the Post doctorates, Fundamental Medicine and Clinical Medicine.
It has gradually established a complete administrative system for educating and training, both undergraduate and graduate students. For undergraduates, at present, there are subjects as Clinical Medicine (5-year duration and 7-year duration), Dental Medicine, Nursing, Medical Jurisprudence, Preventive Medicine, Pharmacology, and Medical Engineering and so on. There are 10 authorized places for awarding doctorates and 29 places for master's degrees. The authorized places for awarding these degrees cover all medical specialties and most of the related medical specialties. For undergraduate student education the emphasis is on practice with basic knowledge and extensive education. The school has built up a training mode of “Broad Entrance, Strong Foundation and Emphasis on Practice”, and under this training mode, the graduates have got high praises from their employers. For postgraduate student education, the emphasis is on training on innovative thoughts and abilities. Besides, the school has actively developed recruitment and training for the students with bachelor's degree of Clinical Medicine and MPH.
The school includes 4 international key disciplines, 8 provincial and ministerial key disciplines, 9 provincial advanced disciplines, 3 first-level research stations for postdoctors, 41 doctor degree program and 57 master degree programs.
4. Campus Overview
The Medical School of Xi'an Jiaotong University is located in Yanta Campus, the south suburb of Xi 'an college culture area, adjacent to the wild goose pagoda, small wild goose pagoda, Shaanxi history museum, Datang Furong Garden, is the palace for many students to study and explore truth, is the cradle of training senior medical professionals in northwest China, is the only key medical college in northwest China originally directly under the Ministry of Health.
5. Medical Programs and Curriculum
The 6-years duration is divided into three parts: the 1st year is for basic courses and Chinese language courses, which are Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Anatomy, Terminology and Chinese language. The following 2.5 years are composed of pre-clinical courses including; Computer Sciences, Computational Methods, Anatomy, Histology & Embryology, Pathology, Physiology, Immunology, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Pharmacology etc. The last 1.5 years are composed of clinical studies and rotations including; Diagnosis, Radiology, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology & Obstetrics and Pediatrics and then there is 1 year internship in different departments of a recognized teaching hospital. The Students will enjoy 6 weeks of summer vacations and 4 weeks of winter vacations annually.
The International Students Building is situated in the medical campus. Each room is well furnished and equipped with air-conditioner, television, telephone, bedding, bathroom, central-heating and other necessary facilities. Usually, two students share one room. The Muslim dining hall and some of the language classrooms for international students are also located in the same building. The university provides facilities for student's recreation to be enjoyed during their free time.
MBBS
1). Program Objectives
The MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) program aims to help students to gain knowledge in medicine and to lay a solid foundation for a successful career as a doctor. In this program (MBBS), students will develop their professional ethnics, skills and basic knowledge on medicine, and demonstrate both analytical and problem solving ability with ample proficiency in diagnosis and management of common disease.
The school of international study is in full charge of admission work, management work and logistics services work for international students.
2). Program Features
The full-time scheme of the program lasts for 6 years, which is divided into 4 stages:
The first stage includes 2 terms, students will focus on Mandarin, Physics, Mathematics and Medical English;
The second stage includes 5 terms, students learn basic medical course;
The third stage includes 3 terms, students learn clinical medical course;
The fourth stage includes 2 terms, students have clinical practice.
All the clinical medicine courses are delivered in English except Mandarin course.
3). Medical Curriculum and Courses
Basic Medical Course: Anatomy, Embryology, Physiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Cytobiology, Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Pathophysiology, Immunology, Medical Psychology, Health statistics, Community Prevention, Occupational Health and Safety, Environment and Health, Drug Toxicology, Food Hygiene, Nutrition and Disease, Medical ethics, Social medicine, Health economics, Health law, Health care management, etc.
Clinical Medical Course: Diagnostics, Radiology, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Gynaecology and obstetrics, Pediatrics, Infectious medicine, Neurology, Psychiatry and Emergency medicine, Otolaryngology, Stomatology, Dermatovenereology, Traditional Chinese medicine, etc.
4). Graduation Tests
The graduation test consists of theoretical examination (60%) and clinical skills examination (40%). Subjects for examinations include Internal Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics and Pediatrics.
5). Award of Degree
Students who are successfully qualified in all compulsory courses fulfill internship and pass graduation tests will be awarded Bachelor Degree of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS).
6. Affiliated Hospitals
In the last year of MBBS, BDS and Pharmacy programs, students are required to have one- year practical training in either hospitals of their home countries or one of the three affiliated hospitals of Xi’an Jiaotong University School of Medicine.
Xi'an Jiaotong University School of Medicine has 3 directly affiliated hospitals opening more than 5000 registered beds and 10 indirectly affiliated hospitals opening approximately 9000 beds to guaranteeing international students’ medical internship and clinical rotation. Three directly affiliated hospitals are the First Affiliated Hospital, the Second Affiliated Hospital (Northwest Hospital) and Hospital of Stomatology.
The First Affiliated Hospital
The First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University (formerly the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Medical University) is a large comprehensive level of first-class hospital under the charge of Health and Family Planning Commission. The First Affiliated Hospital is the national first batch and Shaanxi Province’s first first-class hospital, the national first batch of "top 100 hospitals". Since established in 1956, the First Affiliated Hospital insists to carry out medical treatment, teaching and scientific research work with exquisite medical technology, rigorous attitude of scholarship, realistic scientific attitude and excellent service quality and has achieved great development and improvement in all aspects.
