Brief Introduction
Xiamen University of Technology is located in Jimei, one of the outer districts of Xiamen city. Xiamen is one of China’s five original Special Economic Zones, and is famous not only for its economic growth but also for its beautiful climate and clean environment. Xiamen University of Technology was founded in 1981, at around the same time as the Special Economic Zone. Its university status was conferred by President Xi Jin Ping when he was governor of Fujian Province.

Founded in 1981, Xiamen University of Technology was originally known as Lujiang Industrial University. The university status was conferred by President Xi Jin Ping when he was Governor of Fujian Province. It is a public university which since 2013 has been jointly administered by Xiamen City Government and Fujian Provincial Government, at which time it was also designated a “key provincial university”.
Xiamen University of Technology has created a joint-venture called Digital Innovation College with partnering universities: Ming Chuan University and Central University.
(2). Discipline and programs
Xiamen University of Technology had 15 colleges with majors in economy, foreign language, social sciences, construction, machinery, electronics, art and crafts. Today, Xiamen University of Technology has developed into an open, comprehensive and research-oriented university. Altogether, Xiamen University of Technology offers 63 undergraduate and graduate programs so designed to a student body of 21,404, including international students from more than 10 countries.
By the end of 2013, there are 5 provincial key disciplines and 14 key disciplines of the university. Now it has 1 national characteristic specialty, 2 national comprehensive reform pilot specialties, 9 provincial feature specialties, 7 provincial comprehensive reform pilot specialties, 3 national excellence engineer education and training programs, 6 provincial excellence engineer education and training program and 26 provincial excellent curriculum.
(3). Academic faculty and Scientific research
Xiamen University of Technology has a strong and diverse cohort of faculty members with established industry experience or overseas study/work experience to ensure that our students are exposed to an industry-informed learning environment with forefront knowledge and information from the industry and the world. It currently has 1,000 faculty members, including approximately 50 overseas teachers, and offers 63 undergraduate and graduate programs.
As a university of applied science and technology, Xiamen University of Technology is devoted to applied research through established research centers, a number of which were built in joint efforts with renowned companies such as KingLong Motor Group and ABB(China) as well as prestigious universities such as Newcastle University, Nagoya University(Japan) and University of Regina. Xiamen University of Technology has research funding at both national and international level, including two joint research projects funded by China’s State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs (SAFEA), developed respectively with Nagoya University(Japan) and Newcastle University in 2014 and 2015.
Xiamen University of Technology’s research and development is constantly accelerating. It has been at the top of Fujian Province’s rankings for the number and funding of research projects since 2007.
(4). Great achievements
In 2008, Xiamen University of Technology was named as one of the "Top Ten Fastest Growing Universities in China". Since 2010 it has been one of only three universities in Fujian to be part of the Ministry of Education-sponsored “Outstanding Engineers Training Program”, and the only university in Fujian to be part of the Ministry of Science and Technology’s “Innovation Engineering Program”. In 2011, it also became the only university in Fujian to win the “National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Award”.
Since 2007, Xiamen University of Technology has been at the top of Fujian Province’s rankings for the number and funding of research projects, and has been awarded grants for 11 new research projects by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
(5). Communication and international cooperation
Xiamen University of Technology currently has cooperation agreements with more than 30 universities and corporations in over 20 countries. It offers more than 20 programs which allow credit transfer in partnership with 10 overseas universities, and offers joint degrees at undergraduate and graduate level in cooperation with universities in Britain, Canada, the United States, Malaysia and the Philippines. In addition, Xiamen University of Technology has cooperation agreements with 18 institutes of higher education in Taiwan.
Internationalization is at the core of the strategic plan of Xiamen University of Technology to advance the quality of education and research. This strategy has been well implemented through the development and operation of an array of international collaborative programs with high-quality partner universities abroad, which include University of Texas at Austin (US), University of Missouri (US), University of Alabama (US), Newcastle University (UK), Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand), and University of Regina (Canada). The international collaborative programs take various forms to cater to the needs of faculty and students from different backgrounds, which range from joint programs to articulation programs, exchange students programs, study tours and/or field studies that allow participants to do part of their study in universities overseas.
