Brief Introduction
Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University, established in 1914, is one of the earliest medical schools to introduce western medicine into China. In the early 1920s, the school became famous as “Xiangya, the best in southern China”. It was highly praised for its patient care and talent cultivation by Dr. Sun Yat-sen and Mr. Mao Zedong, two of China’s presidents. As part of its medical education reform, Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University is one of only two medical schools in China simultaneously implementing both the “global minimum essential requirements in medical education” (in accordance with the International Institute for Medical Education, USA) and the “international standard for undergraduate medical education” (in accordance with the World Federation for Medical Education).

Xiangya School of Medicine (XYSM) at Central South University was established through the cooperation of the Hunan Yuqun Society and the Yale-China Association (an American organization founded and constituted by Yale alumni) at the beginning of the 20thcentury. In 1906, Dr. Edward Hume, a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University, was commissioned by the Yale-China Association to open a western medicine clinic (known at that time as the Yali Hospital and later renamed the Xiangya Hospital) in Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province located in the central south region of China. His practice laid the foundation for the establishment of the Xiangya School of Medicine in 1914.

Xiangya School of Medicine has distinguished itself in medical education, research and patient care. Different undergraduate programs and courses are being offered in 11 special fields of study. Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University has been qualified to award master's degree in 67 specialties and doctor’s degree in 62 specialties. And it has been authorized to establish 8 post-doctorial scientific research programs. Besides, it has 9 National Key Disciplines. Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University consists of 6 Schools and Departments, totally, more than 10,000 enrolled students, and there are more than 200 international students come here for studying medicine. Xiangya School of Medicine with nearly 20 million CNY in fixed assets entirely covers an area of 800,000 square meters, among them 770,000 square meters are construction area (excluding the old campus and the Affiliated Hospital). (4). Affiliated Hospitals
Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University offers great condition for international students for medicine internship and clinical rotation. The school insists on an important concept since its foundation to promote interdisciplinary combination of teaching and scientific research with clinical activities. There are five directly affiliated hospitals to the university, including XiangYa Hospital Central South University which is a large comprehensive "National Class A-Grade III Hospital", The Second XiangYa Hospital of Central South University, The Third XiangYa Hospital of Central South University, and other directly affiliated hospitals. What’s more, there are two affiliated hospitals, including Hunan Cancer Hospital and Haikou People’s Hospital. In order to promote international students medical practice, Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University offers 24 clinical teaching bases for clinical rotation and practice.

Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University attracts more and more international students come here for studying medicine with the great achievement here. The school ranked first in the national medical students’ tests for three consecutive years (1977, 1978 and 1979) and in 2002, in the seven-year medical education program evaluation supervised by the Ministry of Education of China, Xiangya outscored all other medical schools. In 2004, the school started its eight-year program in medicine. Its basic medicine program is ranked first in the National Academic Assessment from 2007 to 2009. In November, 2010, Xiangya School of Medicine gained international recognition of its education standards by passing the international accreditation of medical education. In the last 10 years, hundreds of projects are carried out each year in Xiangya School of Medicine. About 59 "863" high-tech projects and 973 national major basic research projects, including three chief important projects are carried out by Xiangya School of Medicine. What’s more, Xiangya School of Medicine attends and carries out 38 National Science and technology projects, 12 National Natural Science Foundation of China, 16 national major projects, 18 major international projects and gets 35 national science and Technology Awards, including 10 National Science Conference Awards. Xiangya School of Medicine Published more than 25000 papers, including more than 3000 papers in SCIE and gets the highest IF value of 57, more than 6 papers get the IF value of 20.

Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University concentrates on international communication and cooperation, and promotes a good relationship with Yale - China Association and China Medical Board. Xiangya School of Medicine established closed university academic links with over 25 countries and districts such as America, Japan, Europe, Africa and other countries.
