(1) History
Xinjiang University was founded in 1924, in Xinjiang. In 1924, Xinjiang Russian and Law School was founded, which is known as the former school of Xinjiang University. In 1935, it was converted to Xinjiang College. Xinjiang University was named in 1960; it is in the southern part of Urumqi. It is a national key comprehensive university with students from various ethnic groups. It is one of two in Xinjiang entering the national “211 Project.” On December 30, 2000, the former Xinjiang University and Xinjiang Engineering Institute merged into a new Xinjiang University. In the past 78 years, it has seen 65,000 students graduate. Xinjiang University has diverse branches of learning such as Philosophy, Economics, Law, History, Sciences, Engineering and Arts. Todate, Xinjiang University is home to 24800 all kinds of students which include 19400 full-time ordinary undergraduates, 5000 full-time graduates, 300 doctoral candidates, 800 part-time graduates and 400 foreign students. Xinjiang University (XJU) comprises fourteen schools, which has courses and branches of study ranging from science, engineering, law and economics to management, the arts and history. A new major in intellectual property was created in 2013. At the present, XJU provides 89 undergraduate specialty, 10 national characteristic specialties and 19 autonomous region scarce talented person specialty. The University has 8 doctoral degree programs of Level I academic disciplines, 47 doctoral degree programs of Level II academic disciplines, 11 Post-doctoral Mobile Station, 29 master degree programs of Level I academic disciplines,154 master degree programs of Level II academic disciplines and 8 master degree categories. Xinjiang University (XJU) has three campuses: the Main Campus, the North Campus and the South Campus. Xinjiang University Library (XUL) is provincial central libraries of China Academic Library and Information System (CALIS).The total collections of the library amounted to 2.765 million volumes and the total capacity of the e-books amounted to 41000GB.XJU has established campus network, the Xinjiang major node of CERNET, the control center of Xinjiang education regional network and Urumqi city network of education metropolitan. Furthermore, the university encompasses modern computer-based libraries and Northwest China first-class multifunctional gymnasium.

The university now has become the Central Asian university student communication base and The Shanghai Cooperation Organization University regional science Project University. Moreover, the university listed as one of the universities under the university president forum projects which include China Russia University President Forum, China Japan University President Forum, China Korea University president Forum, Asian University President Forum and East Asia University President Forum. The university is the host university for the Chinese Government Scholarship students and it also has the qualification to accept Chinese Government Scholarship students with postgraduate degree or above. Xinjiang University has 37 experts with state department special allowance, 19 autonomous regional level distinguished teachers, 14 autonomous regional outstanding experts, 3 members of “Millions of Talents Project”, 10 members of “New century excellent talents support program”, 39 members of Autonomous Region Tianshan Scholars, which includes 3 distinguished professors , 21 distinguished lecture professors, 10 lecturers, 5 Tianshan Students, 9 distinguished professors of Xinjiang University Tianshan Scholar and 14 distinguished lecture professors.

Xinjiang University has been continuously and persistently striving to expand its extensive cooperation and exchange with universities and scientific research institution at home and abroad.
