Brief Introduction
Anhui University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (AHUTCM) is a multidisciplinary higher institution with traditional Chinese medicine science as its focus; it also touches the fields of technology, engineering, management and economics. 1. History
Set up in 1959, Anhui University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has inherited two outstanding medical traditions in Anhui Province. One is from the southern part of Anhui which is called Xin’an; the other one is from the northern part which is called Huatuo. Through 50 years of development since its founding, Anhui University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has grown into a mature higher education institution which not only offers undergraduate and graduate education but also offers continuing and international student education. At present it has created thousands of advanced medical talents, who have spread over different parts of China and the world, who function as backbones in medical practice, management and academic study in their respective fields.
2. Discipline Construction
Anhui University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has 7 schools offering 3 key courses of the provincial level, 1 key course of the national level, 18 Master’s degree-awarding spots, 4 bases for cultivating the doctoral students cooperating with other medical universities, 6 hi-tech TCM research institutes, 2 key laboratories of the provincial level. It has 22 majors leading to a Bachelor’s degree, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Acupuncture, Osteology, Rehabilitation and Nursing. 3. Excellent Faculty
Anhui University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has a qualified faculty, 500 of whom are professors and associate professors and 100 of whom are entitled to supervise students studying for a Master’s or a Ph.D’s degree. There are more than 300,000 volumes of books in the library, which has an e-reading room with 200 booths. The website of the University has been connected to China Education and Research Network and the Internet. The Exhibition Hall of Xin’an Medical Thought School, the Sample Center of Chinese Herbs, the Garden of Medical Herbs, the TCM Clinic with famous Chinese physicians, and the Storing Room of Ancient Chinese Medical Books are all visited by overseas guests more than 1,000 times per year.
4. Significant Achievements
Anhui University of Traditional Chinese Medicine library claims a collection of 1702,000 books, including 33,000 thread-bound ancient books stored in the Ancient Book Department, and it is a “National Key Unit for Ancient Book Protection”. The Centre of Chinese Medicine Specimen is the most special specimen pavilion with the richest collections of medical specimens among all the medical colleges and universities throughout the country, keeping 110,000 medicinal plant specimens. The Centre of Xin'an Medical Culture is the promotion and education base for Traditional Chinese Medicine in Anhui Province.
5. Affiliated Hospitals
Anhui University of Traditional Chinese Medicine owns 2 affiliated hospitals of the provincial level, 1 TCM clinic and 1 hospital specialized in the combination of Chinese and Western medicine: The 1st Affiliated Hospital (The Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine), The 2nd Affiliated Hospital (The Hospital of Acupuncture & Tuina), The Affiliated Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese & Western Medicine and The Affiliated Neurological Hospital. The 1st Affiliated Hospital is a first class comprehensive hospital of the third grade. It commits to the important task of medicine health care, teaching, research, and disease prevention, developing into the cradle for clinical medicine talents training; the clinical research base of Chinese medicine; and the designated provincial medical institution for cadre’s health care. The Second Affiliated Hospital is the first provincial specialty hospital in China to set up acupuncture as the main means of treatment and was approved by the Ministry of Health as the first-class Chinese medicine specialty hospital of third grade.
Communication and Cooperation
With the coming of worldwide trends to studying Chinese medicine, Chinese pharmacy, Acupuncture and Moxibustion, the University’s external exchanges and cooperation are booming. In recent years, the University has signed scores of cooperative agreements with overseas higher education institutions including a cooperation agreement with Canadian Institute of Postgraduate Studies and a student exchange agreement with Hanseo University (Korea). Other foreign partners include Vaxjo University (Sweden), Traditional Chinese Medicine School of Hong Kong University, University of East-West Medicine (California, USA), New York Traditional Chinese Medicine Research Institute (USA), Jamaican Cultural Center of Chinese Medicine (Jamaica), Sydney Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Australia), International University of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Vancouver (Canada), Omega Institute of International Studies (Nepal) and etc.
Since 1996, when the University was authorized to enroll international students, and 1997, when to enroll the students from the districts of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, there have been hundreds of overseas students from dozens of countries and regions having studied at the University. In 2004, six Singaporean students at the University successfully passed the dissertation defenses for and were awarded a Master’s degree. At present, nearly a hundred international students and those from the districts of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan are pursuing their Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree here. There are also many international students coming for their clinical observations and internships each year. Through ten years’ practice of international cooperation and education, the University has accumulated abundant experience in international exchanges and education. Gradually a competitive faculty which is professional at educating international students has formed. The University also created a sound campus service system and a high-efficient school administration for the students. As a result, more and more international students and visitors are attracted to come here from the entire world. The University has become an important base for the international exchanges and education in Anhui, even in whole China.
