Why Study at Beijing Institute of Technology, China

Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) is a public university with a traditional focus on science and technology but developing into other areas such as management and humanities. BIT is a university with distinctive programs and global influence. BIT is decided to create a culture of excellence, and improving research capabilities, and achieving distinction in defence technology. BIT comprises more than 3,500 faculty members and 25,000 full-time students.  Over 14,000 are undergraduate students, nearly 8,000 are graduate students and over 3,000 are doctoral students. BIT has four undergraduate and eleven graduate programs which completely taught in English, to date the university count more than 1,000 international students from 71 countries.  

(1) History 

Beijing Institute of Technology was founded in 1940 in Yan’an, Shaanxi Province and was relocated to Beijing in 1949. The following year, the main campus and the Departments of Maths, Physics and Chemistry of the Institut Franco-Chinois were merged with BIT.

BIT has always formulated its strategies in light of national strategic needs and global developments in science and technology and education, and in accordance with its own strengths and missions. These strategies include: consolidating its strengths in mechanical and vehicle engineering and automation; leveraging its advantages and distinctive programs in IT-related disciplines; and developing new strengths in aerospace engineering. BIT has a vision to build its strengths in both science and engineering, and simultaneously develop disciplines in management and humanities. Currently BIT has three campuses in Beijing: the Zhongguancun Campus (178 acres), Liangxiang Campus (500 acres) and Xishan Experimental Area (42 acres).

(2) Discipline and programs 

Beijing Institute of Technology has four faculties: Faculty of Mechanical and Transportation Engineering, Faculty of Information and Electronics, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Materials, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The university has 19 colleges, as well as the Institute of Educational Research, School of Liberal Arts, School of Continuing Education, School of International Education and Higher Vocational and Technical College, and numerous advanced scientific research centers. Engineering, materials science, chemistry, physics and mathematics are the five disciplines in BIT that are ranked among the top 1% in Essential Science Indicators (ESI) global ranking. BIT offers 4-year undergraduate program, 2-3 years masters program, and 3-4 years Ph.D program. Disciplines in Science and Technology, as the focus of BIT, emphasize to foster research-oriented talents who are profound in fundamental knowledge, capable in practice and strong in innovation. The university has 25,000 full-time students including 14,000 are undergraduate students, nearly 8,000 master’s students and over 3,000 doctoral students. 

(3) Academic facilities and Scientific research 

Currently, BIT comprises more than 3,500 faculty members, including very popular professors, and associated professors in sciences and engineering, PhD holder’s lecturers as well as other academic staff in different fields. Aiming the target of developing a first-class and world-renowned research oriented university, BIT has created favorable environment for teaching and research. There are over 3500 faculty and staff, including 8 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering Sciences (CAES), 1200 full and associate professors (including researchers and senior engineers), 362 supervisors of doctorate programs, 17 experts with outstanding contributions at the national level, and 55 recipients of special subsidies from the central government. Now BIT has 4 National Key Laboratories, 4 National Key Disciplinary Laboratories, 2 Key Laboratories of Ministry of Education, 4 Beijing Municipal Key Laboratories. Each year BIT undertakes over 700 research projects, the funding for scientific research at BIT has been increasing greatly every year. Beijing Institute of Technology Library (BITL), consists of Zhongguancun campus library, Xu Teli library, and four professional branches covering disciplines from machinery and vehicle engineering, science, humanities to law, with a total floor area of 46,000 square meters. Till now, BITL’s printed and electronic book collections amount to 2.526 million and 5.4961 million respectively and the library boasts of 273 databases.

(4) Great achievements 

Beijing Institute of Technology have been made high level achievements in navigation control, injury prevention and safety, mechanical and vehicle engineering, materials science, and information systems and warfare. It has developed a clear edge in technologies relating to intelligent and bionic robotics, space adaptive optics, green energy, modern communications and industrial process control. BIT had received more than 130 national awards of science and technology over the past 30 years, ranking among the top 10 in China. BIT is one of the first 15 universities to join 211 Project which established roughly 100 universities to cope with the challenges of the 21st century. BIT is one of the 1st universities to run a graduate school and one of the key universities supported by the central government in each Five-Year Plan since the foundation of the P.R. China. In the last few years BIT receives considerable trilateral supports and endowments under the agreement signed by the Ministry of Education, the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, and the Beijing Municipal Government. 

(5) Communication and international cooperation 

Beijing Institute of Technology aims to take a global education approach; to achieve its target   BIT established inter-university collaboration with more than 200 renowned universities in 58 countries and regions on six continents; it was the lead founder of the Sino-Spanish University Consortium and the Sino-Russian-Belarussian University Consortium and the co-founder of two Confucius Institutes one in Nigeria and, another one in Canada. BIT has created a global network for exchange and cooperation. BIT has entered into student-exchange agreements with more than 60 internationally renowned universities, including Technical University of Munich in Germany and the United States’ University of California Berkeley. Of its 19 specialized colleges, 15 have established double-degree programs with eight world-class universities, such as the National University of Australia. The colleges regularly organize different forms of international exchanges, such as summer schools, overseas trainings and graduation design projects. Every year, BIT sends more than 1,000 students for overseas study and exchange.
