Central South University, one of the top Chinese comprehensive universities, is a comprehensive and national key university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education of China. (1) History
Approved by the State Council, Central South University was established on April 29, 2000 by merging three separate universities: Hunan Medical University (HMU), Changsha Railway University (CRU), and Central South University of Technology (CSUT). CSU covers an area of 341 hectares.
Hunan Medical University was formerly under the administration of the Ministry of Health. Its history dates back to 1914 when Xiangya Medical College was founded through the joint efforts of Hunan Yuqun Society and the Yale-China Association in the United States. Changsha Railway University, which was one of the universities under the administration of the Ministry of Railways, initially restructured in 1953 as Central South College of Civil Engineering and Architecture, was established in 1960 based on some of its predecessor’s departments, teaching and research divisions. Central South University of Technology, which was one of universities under the administration of the Ministry of Education, was originally named Central South Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 1952 when a nationwide restructuring of institutes of higher education began. It was incorporated based on the disciplines of mining and metallurgy from six universities, which including Wuhan University, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangxi University, Hunan University, Nanchang University and Beijing College of Technology.

Central South University, covers 11 fields of study, including engineering, science, medicine, management, literature, law, economics, philosophy, education, history and agriculture, and offers military science as well. It consists of 31 colleges offering 83 programs for bachelors’ degrees, and a graduate school comprising a number of national key disciplines, including 6 at first-level (ranking 8thin China), 12 at second-level and one in development. 27 first-level disciplines are authorized to confer masters and doctoral degrees. 197 programs are offered for doctoral degrees, 355 programs for masters’ degrees. Central South University also has 31 post-doctoral exchange centers, ranking 9thamong Chinese universities and colleges in term of the numbers. More than 55000 students attend Central South University. Of the total number attending Central South University, approximately 1,000 are foreign students from around the world.
(3) Academic facilities and scientific research
Central South University, currently full-time teachers reaches over 3000, and there are more than 1409 professors and 2586 associate professors. Central South University covers an area of 3,810,000 square meters and has the total floor space of 2,330,000 square meters. The library of Central South University has a collection of more than 4,390,000 volumes. Central South University has 3 national level key laboratories, 4 national level engineering research centers, 2 national level engineering laboratories. (4) Great achievements
Central South University is ranked 15th among 751 universities in "Academic Achievements Ranking". In 2004, Prof. Huang Bo-Yun was awarded the 1st prize of the National Awards for Technical Invention for his significant contribution to research project "Preparation Technology of High-performance Carbon-Carbon Composite Braking Materials in Aviation" and filled the 6-year long vacancy for this prize. Since 2000, Central South University has won national science and technology award about 78 items, which including 11 items of the first prize of national scientific and technological (grand prize) awards, and eight projects selected in “Colleges and universities of China top ten scientific and technological progresses”. By the end of 2013, Central South University has undertaken and completed in national scientific research task for the subject of scientific research projects of various types of more than 800 items, received more than 200 items of national and provincial and ministerial level awards, more than 40 items of patents. In 2010, in the award list of China University of science and technology progress, Central South University ranked second with 6 items of first prize next to Tsinghua University.
(5) Communication and international cooperation
In 1980 -2011 years, Central South University has signed cooperative exchange agreements with more than 150 universities and institutions, such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, France, Germany, Russia and other countries and regions. They extensively develop academic exchanges and personnel training, scientific research and cooperation. Central South University establish a long-term exchange and cooperation research relationship with more than 300 scientific research institutes of the United States Oak Ridge National Institute institutions and other foreign institutes. Every year, over hundreds of experts and scholars from all around the world coming to Central South University for giving lectures and participating in scientific cooperation and academic research.
