1.Long History
Tongji University School of Medicine was set up by the German doctor Erich Paulun in 1907 as Tongji German Medical School. In 1950, the medical school of Tongji University moved to Wuhan. In 2000, Tongji University acquired Tiedao University and the medical school of Tiedao University became medical school of Tongji University. Now the Medical School is under the Faculty of Medicine and Life Science of Tongji University, and consists of the School of Stomatology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Tongji Hospital, Railway Workers Hospital, and Oriental Hospital.
2. Medical programs and academic achievements
Tongji University School of Medicine is developing rapidly as a department strongly supported by Tongji University. In the summer of 2003, the Medical School moved from its old site to the Campus on Siping Road.
The Medical School offers 3 Bachelor degree programs, 20 Master degree programs and 2 doctoral programs. There are four hundred professors and associate professors, including supervisors for PHD students at Tongji University School of Medicine. The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) Program, initiated in 2011 at TUSM, is a six-year English Medium bachelor program, authorized by China Ministry of Education. International students will study with dedicated faculty members, undertake research and clinical rotations with national top research teams in affiliated hospitals, and receive a globally recognized medical degree as Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). Students will also enjoy a colorful campus life and meet students throughout the world. The Medical School’s ultimate goal is to train doctors who are competent in medical care in today’s rapidly changing health-care environment.
Tongji University School of Medicine has built a dedicated and excellent faculty of over 1300 physicians, surgeons and researchers, and brings together a group of diverse and talented students interested in becoming an excellent health-care practitioner and researcher. and 8 affiliated hospitals with over 5000 registered beds in total are responsible for students’ clinical internship/practice and rotations, Under the leadership of Professor Fu Jiliang, Director of Faculty of Medicine and Life Science Faculty, and Professor Hu Dayi, Dean of the Medical School, Tongji University School of Medicine has established the Treatment Center of Cerebral Vessel Disease, the Micro-invasive Medical Center, the Modern Intervention Treatment Center for Coronary Heart Disease and a laboratory for basic clinical experiment and research. Tongji University School of Medicine has employed numerous medical experts from home and abroad which has laid a solid foundation for the development of medical science at Tongji University.
3. Campus Overview
Tongji University School of Medicine has 9 departments focusing on basic medicine education and research. The medical teaching and laboratory building covers an area of 25,000 m2 on Siping Road. The Medical School insists on the development strategy of high-quality, enrolling clinical medical 150 undergraduates, 60 rehabilitation undergraduates, 60 international students for MBBS and about 400 medical master/postgraduate degree and doctoral/PHD degree. Tongji University School of Medicine is equipped with advanced facilities and infrastructure for teaching, treatment and research. Now the Medical School is initiating an over-all improvement of education to make more medical professionals adaptable to modern society by reforming curriculum design, and providing more senior staff to teach aspiring physicians.
4. Global Partnership
Tongji University School of Medicine has established academic exchange programs and cooperation in teaching, research, and clinical practice with universities and institutions all over the world, which provides opportunities of research or clinical rotations and continuing professional training in well-known foreign universities to international students. Tongji University School of Medicine also takes part in many international collaboration research projects and offer international students and physicians research and clinical training.
