Why Study at South China University of Technology

South China University of Technology (SCUT) is one of the major universities in China. It is directly affiliated to the State Ministry of Education. Situating in Guangzhou, the thriving metropolis in South China, it covers a total area of 294 hectares consisting of two campuses: Wushan Campus and University Town Campus. 

1. History 

Formerly known as South China Institute of Technology, the university was first established in 1952. Unifying several major institutes of technology in Guangdong province at the time, and also joined by relevant departments and disciplines from universities in other provinces at the time, the university and its predecessors have a long history in education and research, especially in training talents of engineering and technology. Its outstanding tradition traces back to the earlier 20th century, when Chinese modern thoughts of democracy and science were emerging and developing in Guangdong province.

In 1960, South China University of Technology (SCUT) was selected by the state as one of the key universities in China. In 1981, it was authorized by the State Council as one of the first institutions in the country to confer doctor degrees and master degrees. In 1988, it was renamed as South China University of Technology. In 2000, the Graduate School was authorized to be established.

In 1995, South China University of Technology (SCUT)  was approved to join the list of “Project 211”, which is a Chinese national endeavor aimed at strengthening top institutions of higher learning as a national priority for the 21st century. Then in 2001, the university was approved to be a member of “Project 985”, which is the state’s most significant education project for founding world-class universities.

2. Discipline and programs 

Since its establishment in 1952, South China University of Technology (SCUT) has developed into a major, comprehensive university that offers multiple disciplines including science, engineering, business, management, liberal arts, law, bio-medical science and art design. SCUT is currently composed of 26 schools offering 79 Bachelor’s degree programs, 193 Master’s degree programs, and 107 Ph.D. programs. Since its founding, the university has produced over 290,000 graduates in many areas. A large number of them have become technological mainstays, distinguished entrepreneurs or leading cadres. South China University of Technology (SCUT)  has appropriately been called “a cradle of engineers" and "a cradle of entrepreneurs”.

3. Academic facilities and scientific research 

After over 60 years of development, South China University of Technology (SCUT)  has become a multi-disciplinary university, combining science, engineering, business management, arts and social science and other disciplines. Since its founding, it has educated over 326,000 graduates at all levels. Large numbers of SCUT alumni have made major contributions to the country in fields like politics, economy, technology and education. In 2014, 222 projects in total supported by National Natural Science Fund in South China University of Technology (SCUT). The projects were all sponsored by NSFC with a total amount of 166 million RMB, accounting for an increase of 11.4% as compared with that in 2013.

4. Great achievements 

At the Fifteenth Session of China Patent Awards held in Beijing, three items of patents from South China University of Technology were awarded “the excellence award”. In 2012, the number of patent to apply has reached 1722 pieces; the number of efficient patents has reached 1954 pieces, ranking the seventh among the whole national universities. During 2012-2013, 13 items of patents at this school have achieved China patents; the number of achieved awards ranks the first among all the universities.

5. Communication and international cooperation 

Determining to take more active and efficient roles in globalized educational environment and international academic activities, South China University of Technology (SCUT) has established connections and corporations with over 50 overseas universities, being committed to multiple programs aimed at promoting talent cultivation and scientific research. There are international students from more than 100 countries in the campus, studying Chinese language and culture, natural science, engineering, and business management.

South China University of Technology (SCUT) strives to be an exceptional example for the rest of the international university community. It is active in academic exchange, promoting collaboration with more than 100 overseas universities. In 2014, there were 2200 international students from 130 countries studying at South China University of Technology (SCUT) ; about 60% are enrolled in a degree program, while the rest are learning Chinese. Most of the students in the Chinese language program continue on to undergraduate and postgraduate studies after they pass the required Chinese proficiency exam.
