Brief Introduction
Xi’an Shiyou University (XSYU) was founded in 1951, it has 14 colleges, 3 affiliated departments, and is the one and only multidisciplinary university featuring petro & petro-chemical science education. It is also a university jointly sponsored by Shaanxi provincial government and the three national oil corporations, namely, CNPC (China National Petroleum & Gas Corporation), SINOPEC Group (China Petrochemical Corporation), and CNOOK (China National Offshore Oil Corporation). Moreover, as one of the High-level Universities Key-constructed and Key-supported in the Twelfth Five-year Plan by Shaanxi Government, Xi’an Shiyou University endeavors to offer professional education in the field of petroleum science.
(1). History
In May 2003, with permission of the Chinese National Education Ministry, Xi’an Petroleum Institution changed its name to Xi’an Shiyou University. It was founded in 1951 with the name “School of Petroleum industry in Northwest of China”, and changed its name to Xi’an Petroleum Institution in 1958.
(2). Discipline and programs
As a university picked by the Ministry of Education in the Education and Training Program for Excellent Engineers, it consists of 17 colleges and departments, provides 56 undergraduate programs, 58 postgraduate programs, 1 joint doctorate program.
After 60 years’ development, Xi’an Shiyou University now has clustered within itself a group of characteristic disciplines, including Petroleum Engineering, Geologic Engineering, Chemical and Chemistry Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration. Programs such as Petroleum Engineering, Resource Exploration Engineering, Measurement-Control Technologies & Instrument, Computer Science and Technology, Mechanical design and manufacture & its automation, Process Equipment & Control Engineering, Accounting, Oil-Gas Storage and Transport Engineering, software Engineering, Material Forming & Control Engineering are separately honored as “National Brand Program”, “Brand Program of Shaanxi Province”, “Programs Unique to Shaanxi Province”.
(3). Academic faculty and Scientific research
The number of teaching and administrative staff of Xi’an Shiyou University has now reached more than 1600, including 1000 full-time teachers, 500 strong professors and associate professors, 300 strong master or doctoral supervisors, 660 strong teachers possess master or doctorate degree.
Orienting to the needs of China’s international energy strategy and regional development, Xi’an Shiyou University attaches great importance to scientific research, as is shown in its heightened research level. In the last 3 years, 198 research projects have made the list in key national science projects supported by Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Social Science Fund, 863, 973, and other provincial or ministry research projects. The total research funds have surpassed 350 million. In the year 2011, the research fund reached 127 million.
(4). Great achievements
Orienting to the needs of energy industry, Xi’an Shiyou University attaches great importance to scientific research. In the last 3 years, the total research funds have surpassed 300 million. In the last 5 years, 47 projects have won national or provincial awards of science and technology, of which 2 with National Science Awards. 613 research articles have made SCI, EI and ISTP.
(5). Communication and international cooperation
Xi’an Shiyou University actively engages itself in cooperation and exchanges with higher learning around the world, and pride itself on the friendly relations with 40 strong universities from U.S.A. Canada, U.K. Australia, Germany, Russia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, South Africa, South Korea and other countries. By working with them, Xi’an Shiyou University is able to offer programs like“1+2+1 Sino-American Dual Degree Program”, “4+2 Undergraduate-Postgraduate Program”, “3+1 Junior-College Program.” Moreover, Xi’an Shiyou University also offers “Russian Language Student Exchange Program”, “Paid Summer Internship in U.S.A”.
