Brief Introduction
Zhejiang University of Science and Technology (ZUST) is a multi-disciplinary university with emphasis on engineering, incorporating disciplines in science, arts, economics, management, and education. Combining the technical know-how of German Applied Science Universities with its own experience, Zhejiang University of Science and Technology explores ways of cultivating international specialists with applied skills.
1. History
Zhejiang University of Science and Technology was founded in 1980 with the name of Hangzhou Industrial School Affiliated to Zhejiang University. In 1983, the school changed its name to Hangzhou Industrial School. One year later, the school renamed as Hangzhou College Affiliated to Zhejiang University. In 1987, the college changed its name to Hangzhou College. With the development of the college, it was named as Hangzhou Institute of Applied Engineering Technology in 1992. The institute got the present name Zhejiang University of Science and Technology in 2001.
2. Overview of Campus
Zhejiang University of Science and Technology is located in the historical and picturesque city of Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province, one of the most prosperous provinces in China. Zhejiang University of Science and Technology is at the foot of Xiaohe Mountain, with a tranquil lake inside and rolling hills surrounding the campus, only twenty-minute ride from the most famous scenic spot in China--West Lake. At Present, there are a total of more than 21000 full-time students enrolled at Zhejiang University of Science and Technology.
3. Strong Faculty and Discipline Construction
Among its approximately 1,200 faculty members, over 340 members have title of professor or associate professor. Teachers with senior ranks of professor or above account for 30% of the total teaching staff. Zhejiang University of Science and Technology has 11 schools and offers 50 undergraduate programs and 20 graduate programs (master’s degree) across a wide range of fields. 5. Scientific Research and Great Achievements
Zhejiang University of Science and Technology attaches great importance to scientific research. A variety of research institutes have been established including Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Food Engineering, Bio Engineering, Functional Material, Information Technology and Automation Engineering, Computer Application Technology, Architectural Design, Structure Engineering, Geo-technical Engineering, Design and Creativity, Industrial Engineering, Dye and Pigment. And there are two other technology centers, namely, the Digital-controlled Process Technology Center and the Analysis and Testing Center. By strengthening incentive mechanisms and improving the management of scientific research and generally encouraging the teachers to engage in scientific research, a well qualified research team has come into being. Furthermore, in recent years, the recruitment of new teachers with higher degrees or those recruited from high level positions greatly enhanced the university’s research capability. In order to bring the teachers’ initiative to do research into full play, so as to make a larger contribution to local economic growth, the university established comprehensive scientific and technological cooperative relationships with the Xihu district and Tonglu county of Hangzhou City, Jindong district and Yongkang City of Jinhua prefecture, Tiantai county and Tongxiang city, etc. In cooperating with local enterprises, relevant schools and institutes under the University set up some specialized centers such as the Renewable Energy R&D Center, the Paper Making and Color Printing R&D Center, the Electronic Technology R&D Center, Applied Material Science R&D Center, the Intelligent Appliances R&D Center and the Institute of Applied Bio-technology Products etc. During the past three years, there have been 600 research projects of different levels and different categories undertaken by the teachers in the University. Research funding doubled on a year-on-year basis. There is a strong momentum for continuing the development of scientific research at the university.
6. International Communication and Cooperation
