Brief Introduction
Zhejiang University School of Medicine is located in a beautiful, historical, and cultural city - Hangzhou, which is 180 kilometers southwest of Shanghai and known as "the paradise on earth" in China. Founded in 1912, it has a long history of more than 100 years and 150 years’ history of hospitals and the School of Medicine is proud to make significant contribution to the initiation of modern medicine in China. The school is committed to continuing this tradition into the future, in order to reach its goal to become one of the best medical schools in China with international reputation. The School of Medicine is also proud to have 7 prestigious affiliated hospitals. It is essential to set up a solid platform to conduct transitional research that will promote the integration of the basic sciences with clinical practice, and ultimately to improve patients care. 1. Long History
The history of Zhejiang University School of Medicine can be traced back to the Chekiang Provincial College of Medicine founded in 1912 and the National Chekiang University Medicine College founded in 1945. The two merged in 1952 and established the Zhejiang Medical College, which was then upgraded as Zhejiang Medical University in 1960. In 1998 it was merged with Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University and Zhejiang Agriculture University to re-establish the present Zhejiang University, and reorganize School of Medicine and College of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the following year. In 2009 Zhejiang University launched “Super Ministry Reform”, reorganized School of Medicine and College of Pharmaceutical Sciences again, two of which are rebuilt as Zhejiang University Faculty of Medicine. Thus, a century has witnessed Zhejiang University School of Medicine, although with several changes of name and place, evolving into one of the most prestigious medical schools in the nation.
2. Discipline Construction and Achievements
School of Medicine is composed of 8 faculties: Basic Medicine, Public Health, First Clinical Medicine, Second Clinical Medicine, Third Clinical Medicine, Dental Medicine, Stomatology and Nursing. Apart from these academic faculties, there are 6 affiliated hospitals and the affiliated Yiwu Hospital is under construction, which establishes a solid foundation for School of Medicine to fulfill its three-fold roles in medical education, biomedical sciences and healthcare services. Educational programs of School of Medicine include an 8-year continuum, a 7-year continuum, and a 5-year bachelor program (MBBS) for international students. The graduate program has a wide coverage of disciplines in biomedical sciences and clinical sciences. Equally important is the role that the school has been playing in research. At present, the total number of staff members and medical and nursing workers has reached over 10,000, including 568 full professors and associate professors, 212 doctoral mentors and 663 master mentors, and also one member of China Academy of Sciences, three are members of China Academy of Engineering, five are Cheung Kong Chair Professor. There are now over 4,000 students including over 800 doctoral candidates.
Zhejiang University School of Medicine is dedicated to training and bringing up medical talents of medical practice, biomedical research and public health management. Educational programs include 8-year Medical Doctor Program, 7-year master of medicine program, 4-year Bachelor of Pharmacy program, and 6-year Clinical Medicine program for international students (MBBS) etc. It has set up basic medicine, clinical medicine, oral medicine and pharmacy primary discipline for doctor degree and five mobile post-doctoral stations.
With significant growth in biomedical sciences for the past decades, the medical school now stands in a leading competitive position. We embrace four national key disciplines, one state key laboratory and 15 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, and are running “Medical Technology and Disease Control and Prevention” 985 science and technology innovation platform. In recent years, the research funds have increased enormously. The number of publications that were cited by SCI ranks among the top ones nationwide. Equally important is that 4 projects won the most prestigious National Invention Award or National Science & Technology Advancement Award. Provincial and ministerial awards account for 1/3 of all research awards in Zhejiang University.
3. Campus Overview
In this brand-new and picturesque Zijingang Campus of Zhejiang University, the Medical Faculty is equipped with modern teaching and research facilities, and has built up a new academic management system centering on course team and research team(PI system), all of which have created a better environment for establishing a research Faculty of Medicine. School of Medicine is strongly confident that the Zhejiang University School of Medicine will achieve a level of excellence unprecedented in the long history.
4. Medical Programs - MBBS
Zhejiang University School of Medicine is one of the first 30 institutions authorized by the Ministry of Education to conduct MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) program. In September 2006, the School of Medicine launched its first class offering MBBS to overseas students. Currently, there are 299 students of 4 batches. This is the first in Zhejiang University to enroll full-time clinical medicine international students. MBBS program has greatly promoted the pace of internationalization of medical education.
5. Affiliated Hospitals
Zhejiang University School of Medicine (ZUSM) boasts of 7 Grade III Class A hospitals: the First Affiliated Hospital, the Second Affiliate Hospital, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, the Affiliated Women’s Hospital, the Affiliated Children’s Hospital, the Affiliated Dental Hospital and the Seventh Affiliated Yiwu Hospital. With a total capacity of over 7700 beds, all 7 hospitals had 8,780,000 emergency visits, 238,000 inpatients, and a total operating revenue 6.233 billion Yuan. They have developed into provincially premier, state well-known and with internationally standardized medical centers with complete disciplines, high quality competence. They excel in medical education of main subjects of Zhejiang University, residents, and specialist training, clinical technology and medical engineering.
Affiliated hospitals are also the centers of clinical teaching faculties, among which the First Affiliated Hospital and the Affiliated Children’s Hospital encompass the First Department of Clinical Medicine, the Second Affiliated Hospital and the Affiliated Women’s Hospital are also the Second Department of Clinical Medicine, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital has the Third Department of Clinical Medicine and Nursing, and the Affiliated Dental Hospital also works as the Department of Stomatology.
The Seventh Affiliated Yiwu Hospital is the first affiliated hospital outside Hangzhou. "Binjiang New District" of the Affiliated Children's Hospital and “Women’s Health Care Build” of the Affiliated Women’s Hospital are under construction and expansion. Zijingang Medical Center and Huajiachi Dental Center are under preparation.
In accordance with the school development plan, Zhejiang University School of Medicine strives to build the affiliated hospitals into the best international research hospitals around 120th anniversary (2017), and also medical training bases of high-level medical innovative talents, first-class radiation centers of medical technology, gather places of renowned doctors and scientists.
6. Communication and Cooperation - International Exchange
To build world-class medical college, Zhejiang University School of Medicine actively carries out multi-channel, multi-level, all-around international cooperation and exchanges and has signed cooperation and exchange agreements with a number of well-known overseas medical schools, and established strategic partnership. Delegations and renowned scholars from world-famous universities are frequent visitors and guest lecturers every year. At the same time, the Medical School has established collaborative affiliations or academic exchanges with international famous academic and cultural institutions for developing high-quality international educational outreach programs and raising the international reputation.
