2. Discipline Construction and Achievements
At present, there are 2,553 students enrolled in educational programs at Shantou University Medical College, including 1,460 undergraduate students, 1,088 master and doctorate students, and 6 international students. In 2010, approved by the Ministry of Education, Shantou University Medical College was the first to recruit international students from US and Canada. In 2012, the program in Clinical Medicine of SUMC was top-ranking of universities and research institutions worldwide based on ESI (Essential Science Indicators) Analysis. Scientific research papers have been published in the prestigious journals such as Nature, The Lancet, Journal of Virology and PNAS. Shantou University Medical College also won 46 national, provincial and municipal science and technology awards, including a First Class Prize in Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards (Science and Technology) from the Ministry of Education. All these achievements mark the steady rise of SUMC ’s reputation in the quality of scientific research.
3. Campus Overview
Shantou University Medical College currently has two campuses: the original medical campus in the historic center of Shantou city, and another modern campus shared with the main campus of Shantou University in the northeastern suburbs. The majority of our students spend their first few years at the main university campus, and carry on their specialized training and research activities using the extensive facilities at our original medical campus site in the heart of the city. There are regular, free shuttle buses running between the two campuses.
4. MBBS Overview
The program is conducted in English and taught by qualified basic science and clinical faculties. The established international textbooks and publications are recommended as references for the students. It effectively integrates basic medical science with advanced clinical training and focuses on skills development through Problem-Based Learning and maximized clinical exposure. The program also offers courses in Chinese language and culture, thus enabling you to gain a world-class medical education whilst immersing in the rich Chinese culture.
Starting from 2012, Shantou University Medical College adopts an objective evaluation system, U.S. Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE), to assess student performance. Over the past three years, the pass rate of our Chinese students in English stream in USMLE Step 1 is high. SUMC is the first and the only medical school in China that trains its students for USMLE.

Shantou University Medical College has total of 10 affiliated hospitals and 10 teaching hospitals across Guangdong Province. These 10 affiliated hospitals comprise 5 directly affiliated hospitals and 5 non-directly affiliated hospitals. The 5 directly affiliated hospitals are SUMC First Affiliated Hospital, SUMC Second Affiliated Hospital, SUMC Affiliated Cancer Hospital, Shantou University Mental Health Center and STU-CUHK Joint Shantou International Eye Center. The 5 non-directly affiliated hospitals are Shantou University Medical College Associated Southern China Hospital (Guangdong General Hospital), SUMC Associated Yuebei People’s Hospital, SUMC Associated Shenzhen Longgang Hospital, SUMC Associated Shenzhen Children’s Hospital and Shantou University Medical College Associated Peopl’s Hospital of Sanya. Among these hospitals, 5 hospitals are level three first-class hospitals. These affiliated hospitals provide international students’ medical training and clinical rotation to lay the foundation for their qualification as a doctor after graduation.
6. International Student Education
Shantou University Medical College offers English Medium Programs of Medical Bachelor/Undergraduate Degree (including MBBS), Master/Postgraduate Degree to international students. With approval of the Ministry of Education of China, Shantou University Medical College (SUMC) launched an international MBBS program in 2010. The program is a five-year innovative program specially tailored to international students who have a general interest in China and have the ambition to become an outstanding international clinician capable of practicing medicine in different countries around the world.
Communication and Cooperation
Shantou University Medical College is highly active in international academic exchanges and scientific research collaborations. The college has established intercollegiate relationships with many renowned overseas medical institutions, including those in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, The Netherlands, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong. Additionally, the college has established long-term cooperative ties with the World Health Organization in the field of infectious diseases.
