West China Medical Center of Sichuan University, is located in Chengdu, Sichuan, China, and is administered by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. 1. History
The predecessor of the Center is WCUU (West China Union University) was founded in 1910, granted to register by the former Chinese government in 1933, and renamed “West China University”(WCU) after the people’s government took over the university in 1951. It was identified as a professional medical college—Sichuan Medical College—after a series of departments adjustments and reforms in 1953, and then renamed “West China University of Medical Science” in 1985. The merger with the former Sichuan University in 2000 has greatly speeded up the development of the Center from a medical university into a comprehensive research university with full range of disciplines covering arts, science, engineering, and medical sciences.
2. Discipline Construction and Achievements
West China Medical Center of Sichuan University has won 243 Ministerial and Provincial prizes with 19 patent rights. 1700 research papers were published out of which 600 were published in international journals. The School is authorized to confer doctoral degrees in the two primary disciplines of Clinical Medicine and Integrated Western-Chinese Medicine. Clinical Medicine at WCSM ranked 5th and Integrated Western-Chinese Medicine ranked 3rd nationwide in the 2008 Primary Discipline Evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education. The School’s teaching excellence has been recognized in nine disciplines by the Central government, and in 26 disciplines by the provincial government.

West China Medical Center of Sichuan University is located in Huaxi Campus which is famous for the beautiful environment. The Huaxi Bell Tower in the campus is the landmark of the Huaxi Dam. 4. MBBS Program Overview
West China Medical Center of Sichuan University offers Six-year English-medium MBBS Program for the international students. This program is composed of two years of basic medical sciences courses, three years of clinical courses and one year of internship training. West China School of Medicine is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools published by WHO and the International Medical Education Directory (IMED) published by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECMFG) and the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER). The graduates of MBBS program are eligible to take the Medical Licensing Examinations held by the medical councils in different countries.
Since its beginning the MBBS Program has enrolled more than 700 medical students from more than 20 countries such as Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Singapore, USA, Canada, Korea, Fiji, Cameroon etc. Almost all the MBBS graduates have excelled in the medical council licensing examinations in their respective countries and have been employed in reputed government or private hospitals in their home countries.
5. Bachelor of Stomatology Program Overview
West China School of Stomatology, was founded in 1917, which was the origin of modern dental education in China. High-level and long-academic teaching manners have become the major part of its dental education. More than 4000 qualified dentists, including approximately a hundred international students, graduated from the school and were awarded master or doctoral degrees.
6. Affiliated Hospitals
West China Medical Center of Sichuan University has four affiliated teaching hospitals. The four affiliated hospitals are all level three first-class hospitals and play a great important role in local people’s life. The four affiliated hospitals are West China Hospital, West China Second University Hospital (West China Women’s and Children’s Hospital), West China Stomatology Hospital and No.4 West China Teaching Hospital. These affiliated hospitals provide international students’ medical training and clinical rotation to lay the foundation for their qualification as a doctor after graduation.
